Quote:
KAWASAKI ZXR400 L
FRONT
The forks look externally very similar to the 750, but internally there is quite a lot of difference - it is
a much cheaper fork inside. The forks have too much compression damping causing the bike to feel
harsh over small bumps. The forks also do not have enough rebound damping, causing them to
return very quickly when you let go of the brake. The springs inside the forks are too soft for the
average rider weight, which makes the forks dive and bottom out under braking. One of the big
problems with the ZXR400 forks is that the oil is metered at the top of the fork. Because of this, the
only way to cure this problem is to replace the cartridges. The Maxton replacement cartridges are
adjustable for preload and rebound and are sprung and valved to suit the riders weight, we have to
modify the original fork tops to take the new cartridges and damping adjusters. The cost of the
conversion is £330.00 plus VAT plus seals which cost £25.00 plus VAT. To service the forks and install
the cartridges costs an extra £110.00 plus V.A.T. Bushes if you need them cost £13.00 + V.A.T each.

REAR
The rear shock is far too hard, we fit a softer spring, but the major problem is the damping which is
too hard. The shock needs reshiming. Cost of reshiming and respringing is £180.00 plus VAT. Some
people fit a different rocker to try and improve it, but although this marginally improves it, it does
not cure the problem.
We also supply different types of Maxton unit.. The non remote unit costs £415.00 plus V.A.T but we
also make a piggy back remote reservoir unit that has a second compression adjuster and ride height
adjustment which costs £570.00 plus V.A.T.

How does that sound?

sounds like somone is trying to sound clever and make you buystuff.

take this for example:

The forks have too much compression damping causing the bike to feel harsh over small bumps.
The forks also do not have enough rebound damping, causing them to
return very quickly when you let go of the brake.
The springs inside the forks are too soft for the average rider weight, which makes the forks dive and bottom out under braking.

dive and bottom out under braking while having too much compression damping.

it may just be me (and the way I read stuff) but I think there taking you for a ride.

buy some new progressive springs (progressive suspentonmight mak them), new fork oil (manufacturer weight)
if your inclined, buy a new rear spring/damper while your at it,

and you might just save some dosh

Im not gonna sell the zxr, im gonna throw money at it instead.
I am in the market for a race shock so i started looking around.

Either nitron rear/hagon prog front springs or maxton f&r.

The lump is sweet at the mo, but i am looking for a decent one i can drop off at my mechanics gaff for him to rebuild.

Seems to make sense?

Compression damping too stiff to compensate for too squidgy forks.
So harsh ride from the damping, while will slow them down, but they'll still complete the same amount of dive, just over a bit longer time?

Everyone I know who has had dealings with Maxton, race or road have been happy. You get what you pay for i.e. high quality kit tailored to you from a company that have lots of experience. After sales back up is good too, they answer e mails, give advice etc.

You get what you pay for with suspension work. If you can afford it or a similar quality improvement to your 400 go for it. Improving the suspension on my NC30 made a good handling bike even better. Cool

I've got a couple of customers who have had Maxton work on thier Tiger 800's, one had front & read and the other just front for now but he is going back for the rear. Both are very very impressed and have said that their bikes are transformed.
