Carried a few long items but usual items if they sit across the seat are not wider than the panniers.
Carried a long item, some of those flexi poles for pushing wires and sorting drains. Put these in a tube along the length of the bike sticking out at the back. Actually tied a bright bike muff (neck thingy) to the end for dozy car drivers.
When I did do archery I actually got a two piece longbow and was looking at fixing something like a map or guttering tube to the bike to carry it vertically. Wanted it enclosed so didn't bend. I liked the idea of the map tube as it was extendible and came with end caps. Did not want it along the length of the bike because it might get more damaged. Couldn't get a mounting system though (those with more metal bashing skills will not have this issue). Not sure I could have coped with a one piece longbow though although it would have been interesting with a flag on the top.

As mentioned, a map tube or similar usually along the length of the bike, with a bright cloth over the end if it protrudes.
I was in a similar position some time ago, until I eventually got a couple of telescopic fishing rods. ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

I was in a similar situation to yourself. I did what a couple of the guys have suggested, and mounted a section of fishing pole tube to the crash bars on my bike, it works perfectly! The hardest part is finding a decent mounting point...

Well the rod is in two bits, but it protrudes about 2-3'. Will find a safety jacket to dangle on the back. As long as its legal, don't mind it being stupid ____________________ Rusty '02 Vito Camper + CBR600F3 |

I saw two guys on a bike once heading towards Putney from Mitcham. The pillion was holding an aluminium extending ladder under his arm. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
