What should i use on my CBT. i am currently doing up by bike ready for my 16th in february, but i dont know whether i should use my own bike or hire one out for the day. being that i would still be sketchy on a bike, what would i do if i crashed it? but then it would be better getting used to riding my bike than changing to another after doing my CBT???

Do they have geared 50cc bikes which you can use? If they do then I'd use their bike instead of your own RS1 just because then if you drop the bike you don't end up costing yourself lots to fix the fairings. To use your own bike you'd have to sort a way of getting it there and home again if you didn't get your CBT that day. Also is your RS1 restricted?

I reckon you should do your CBT on your own bike. That way, you'll get to know it, and not someone else's, straight away. I did my CBT on a scooter, let alone a different geared bike and had to relearn everything with the help of my dad and various people. Which was pants, tbh.
I don't think you'll crash it. If the bike school is good enough, they'll make sure you know exactly what you're doing before letting you out on the roads and stuff and it's pretty hard to do any serious damage to your bike if it just falls on one side, in the playground or wherever you're taught.
Having said that, the principles of any geared bike are the same and it won't be too difficult to convert from one to another. But I'd leave that untill I was more experienced at riding at all.

Exactly. Saying that, I didn't get anywhere near the point on my CBT where I was close to dropping a bike...

I took my CBT on their bike. Remember to use your bike you must be fully taxed and insured.

I was happier taking it on a perfectly good hire bike, rather than my ratty ever-so-slightly dodgy mz.

as long as you've got an ounce of bike competence in you, you'll be fine switching from one bike to another. I wouldn't take the CBT on a scooter though, and then have to learn gears for the first time all by yourself on the wide open road.

Luckily I'd ridden bikes before my CBT, and been driving for about a year.

One big advantage of useing the schools bike is you dont have to get yours there! If you dont know anyone else who rides its pretty much impossible unless you like pushing

Why do people always worry about switching between bikes?

You talk as if you're going from a 50cc to a Gixxer 1000 Laughing

But yeah. Use the schools' bike. Then you might appreciate just how good your own one is when you ride it afterwards...

The problem I can see here is that you are only going to be 16 right?

Most riding schools only have 125 geared bikes, which you cannot ride, so if you go for theirs you will be on a scooter/moped. Do you have someonw who can teach you gears etc once you have showed you are competent on the road? And somewhere quiet to practice?

If you do, go for theirs. If you don't, I think you're going to have to do a fair bit of hunting to find someone suitable to do your CBT with.

Just use their bike, it will save you alot of effort and cost you very little, like over people said, if you drop it you won't need to worry to much and if you fail then you don't have to lug your bike home.

i will be learning to ride my geared bike on private land before my CBT, just to get used to the gears, so i dont stall every 5 seconds. i can get my dad to teach me.

Thats it then i will use the schools bike, even if it is not geared, leaning the gears isnt the only thing u need to know on a bike...

use their bike mate, touch wood you don't, but if you do come off, it won't wreck your bike, also you won't pay petrol and you can rag it around without too much worry. although it will be slightly more expensive. i used theirs for my CBT, lessons and test.

I would use thier bike. Just make sure you get out on your own bike the minute you get your ticket.
