Bloody hell, just posted a problem about my nephew's bike, and I have one of my own. Started Bike rode down the road all was well, stopped did my stuff, hopped back on only the solenoid clicked... Checked voltage after bump starting, all was perfectly ok. Fuses all good. So left in garage and thought I'd put this out to see what you guys can come up with before I get my spanners out this weekend.

another wet dream..............water enters solenoid on these little beauties or is that beasties.............

solenoid clicking would suggest bad connection..........low battery.........whern eng runnin and lights on, do thwey increase in brightness when eng reved from idle, dont rev too hig, to aboyut 4k should do. :D

Tried bridging the solenoid with a rubber-handled screwdriver?

If you only did a short journey it was probably not enough to top up the battery after you had started out on your trip.

If you have an Optimate tricle charger type device it may well be an idea to try this first.

if you are handy with a multimeter,disconnect the lead that goes from the solenoid to the starter motor and connect your meter on ohms/resistance x1 range across the terminals of the solenoid.Turn on the ignition and press the starter button and hold it there.If the meter reads zero ohms then the solenoid is okay.

To me it sounds as though the battery needs a good charge.If after this the solenoid starts to click again then I would suspect the battery if the voltage across the battery with the engine running is reading something like 13.5vdc.

This weekend I charged the battery, but same problem, clicking solenoid. Seems that I may have a bad battery which is strange as it's only a year old ? Bridged solenoid and apart from the sparks there was no other effect. Have not done resistance check on solenoid, so hope to sort that this week.

So, it was the battery. The voltage was fine ! One cell had turned cloudy, so I guess it had failed somehow. Thanks for the advice.
