Hi all. I'm a fairly new member and late starter at 30 years old (never driven either). Just passed my CBT today. Third attempt but finally got it! My mate 'Redeemer' posted on here recently about the trouble we had on our first couple of attempts and everyone's advice on here was really helpful (I was a reader but first time poster).

Now I'm looking at gear, bike etc. Did the CBT on a Suzuki Van Van, which was comfortable but thinking of looking at the ybr 125. Planning to do the DAS at some point in the future but definitely want to get some miles under my belt first.

Enjoy. And if riding 125's for a while feels like the right thing to do, it probably is. I rode 125's for 4 years and didnt regret it at all, although they were 2-stroke, so a lot more fun than your average YBR, CG etc.

Have fun, and if you want to know anything, just ask away. Pretty much anything you want to know about bikes, someone on here will know. And if they don't, they'll probably tell you anyway...

well done for sticking at it - remember the CBT isn't a test, it's just a starting point. Definitely worth getting instruction so you don't pick up bad habits- go for it with DAS - you'll love the bigger bikes

Hi Paulie,

Welcome to the forum! Congrats on passing your CBT Smile If you want a bike that's not going to break the bank, you should check out Lexmoto - They try to produce bikes similar to Yamaha, VERY similar infact! This is their YBR kind-of bike -> https://www.lexmoto.co.uk/DFE125-8A.php Smile

Once again, welcome to the forum, and gratz!

The Street would be a decent choice if you need to buy on credit from a dealer. Costs about £1200 or so OTR. For that sort of money you could get a YBR or maybe even a Honda CBF off gumtree or e-bay and in the long run that would be more sensible as they would hold their value better than the Lexi. I'm not saying they are any better to own or ride than the Street but the resale value of the mainstream brands does kinda win out. On the plus side for Lexmoto, their spares backup is a match for anything else out there - just check out their online spares service at www.cmpo.co.uk .
Also, remember to sink some cash into locks/chains and sensible winter riding gear - that January commute in the cold and wet demands some decent gear!
So, welcome to BCF, happy riding Smile

Well done for sticking at it, YBR is a good choice & you should see a descent return on what you pay for it if it's well kept. As for gear, aside from the obvious (lid) I'd say at least a descent bike jacket, gloves and some strong boots that cover the ankles. Hopefully you'll never need them but if you do it's better to have them than not. Wink

Thanks everyone Smile

I'll definitely look at getting some decent protective gear and some waterproofs, having been soaked through at the CBT before last! I will look at the bikes mentioned here and pop into a dealer and sit on a ybr as I've never tried one.

Have to say I've still got a soft spot for the Van Van though, as I did rack up 4 hours on the road across two CBT attempts.

I rode a Van Van at our training school, was quite comfy but not much go (even for a 125). Laughing

Have to agree with you there. Even having never ridden anything else, I still felt slow and wanted more oomph. Maybe a test ride on something else is the way to go.

I've just sold my VanVan and in many respects couldn't fault it, just wasn't comfy in the position it had me riding in.

Those tyres are chunky and stuck to the road (well given it's a 125 and me riding it) - certainly felt more confident with more rubber.

Acceleration in 1st and 2nd was good but it did yawn in all other gears and worked it's way up to 60mph.

Does / did seem to be a bullet proof bike. It was on a 2004 plate, racked up 7 owners inc me and 26000 miles and it never missed a beat.

Whilst VanVan not for me it did have a fair bit going for it, as you say though test rides are the way to go and I hope you find the bike best suited to you.

Plenty of other 125's out there gent, best thing to do is to shop around the local bike shops and see what fits the requirements you've got. Wink

Welcome Paulie.

Sounds like you've got the plan well worked out mate. I did my 'apprenticeship' on a YBR 125 for a year before doing my DAS and moving on to bigger things and don't regret a minute of it. Great little bikes, light and nimble for filtering and throwing around corners and and literally run for ever on a single tank.

Enjoy, keep us updated and stay safe. Thumbs Up

Congrats mate and welcome to the forum. I know you say you "past" your cbt and I know what you mean but I guess that you must of "failed" two attempts? Going on the logic that it's training and not a test I'm just wondering, did you have to pay anything after your initial first cbt fee?

As its training you as the student can't fail, only your instructor can

Good luck mate Smile It's a learning experience really. After my first attempt I was very shaky, but then away from the bike, what I'd learnt sunk in and I improved massively on my return a week later. You'll be surprised how much you can pick up without even realising it. Just try to enjoy the experience!

Cheers mate. I had a pass guarantee with mine, which was £30 extra the first time round(I just knew i wouldnt make it on one go on a geared bike). Each time I returned I paid £49 for bike hire and insurance. In a way I'm glad I was called back a few times as I'm far more confident about getting on a bike on my own. I was awful at first!

I'm glad it worked out for you however I can't help but think you should pay a single fee and then they train you no matter what level of knowledge you already have and whatever speed you learn at. Training is training. There is no pass or fail so if your not fully trained by the end of the day they have failed and should invite you back for further training at no extra cost. Just seems a little unfair to me

I honestly think the theory test, or the hazard perception in particular is the hardest part of the whole process. The correct system for clicking takes a bit of getting used to, I think I only just scraped through on the hazard part!

I found an AA iPhone app helpful in getting used to the hazard perception clicking. One or two clicks too early would result in a score of 0 on the app. I did about 3-4 slow clicks over a hazard in order to get 5 points. The actual test seemed fairly close to that.

I know what you mean. I do genuinely think they are a decent school though. Now, if I was 17 and didn't have the money to keep going back I'd probably have felt a bit hard done by. Maybe it's down to the DSA definition of 'training'. It does feel like a test despite what everyone says.
