Gs500 Not starting, making strange sound (with video)

Stuck at work

Not the battery this time, but I have no idea what it is it did sound a bit funny when it started this morning.

that noise is the starter motor spinning, but the starter clutch isn't engaging., and so will not turn the engine over just turn freely, try giving the starter casing a couple of taps (worth a try hey?) if not bump start it to get you home then dig further.

just bump start it (push start) rolling it in gear with the clutch in then letting the clutch out to start the engine. this will get you home.

Starter clutch is fucked i think.

Pull the generator cover off, pull the starter mid gear out.

Check the starter gear spins (one on the flywheel). If It spins both ways, your starter clutch is fooked. I have one on the toolbox at the moment if you're interested?? Bought it with a starter gear i needed to replace my bent one. PM me & i'll send pics.

I suck at bump starting bike on my own and work just behind Regen street in london so would look a right numpty running up and down the one way street trying to start my bike....

Good result though is that my Natwest account breakdown cover now seems to cover bikes too so I will give them a call in the morning.

Thanks for your help and I will report back what the problem was when its fixed.

Trick to bumping a gs.

Neutral, left foot on left peg, right foot on floor, stand up, push it along like a scooter. Push it up to speed, clutch in, click first gear, jump down on the seat & bang the clutch out whilst giving a little throttle.

Makes it easier to push up to speed. Significantly so. And as your left foot is covering the gear selector anyway using method described above...

So collected the bike from the great guys down at FWR yesterday.

They took off the engine casing and found that the bolt for the generator was loose causing the starter not to engage properly. If that makes sense, he said it was to do with the generator anyway. They took it out poked around some more put it back together and topped it up with oil. Its all working fine again now.

£40 all up. which was much better than I was expecting and a lot less than if I had of taken it to Metropolis I think.

FWR seemed very friendly and fitted me in when they were obviously busy, top guys.
