on my project rs 125 (mechanically working though) the gears don't feel right. the bike is on the paddock stand, and i find it difficult getting it into neutral (tested by turning back wheel). also, the other gears feel difficult to get into, and i can't feel 6 gears, i can feel it going through 1,2, 3 then can't feel anymore gears after that. it just doesn't feel smooth, or like the gears are sitting in properly when selected. what could be the problem?

is this with the engine running? as if not you will struggle to select many gears due to the gear "dogs" not lining up without anything turning.
and yes neutral is sometimes hard to find on lots of bikes.

how's the chain? if its really slack it can make gear selection hard too.
or maybe something internal inside the box but I would be tempted to try it under load on a road before condemming it.
I bought a gpz400r as a project and we couldn't find neutral, as the muppet who I bought it off had put the gear rod on the wrong way round meaning you had to click down from 1st to 6th instead of up lol

well the bike has gp gearing so is reversed. it feels like it's missing the last 3 gears, strange. i also find it difficult to get the gears in properly. i dont think the chain is loose, but i will take a picture of it tomorrow. the bike is ex race if that means anything to this problem. could it be a clutch or gearbox problem?

Measure it's slack, says it should be 25mm right there on the swing arm

i used the method at 1:00 to check the chain tension with the bike in the paddock stand, and it measured at 63mm!

also, this probably sounds stupid, but how do iadjust the chain? ive looked it up, and most say to loosen the wheel nut, then adjust the allen bolts on either side evenly, but i cant see these...

No it doesn't. It doesn't look too bad. You need 3cm of play at the tightest part of the chain in the centre of the lower chain run. It might be a little loose but it isn't too bad.

I'd expect the gears to be stiff if the chain was too tight, but not too loose.

To adjust it, you take an open ended spanner and you turn the two bolts which press against the chain adjusters. The chain adjusters are the square things which the rear wheel axle goes through.

Obviously you turn both bolts the same way, which means you move the spanner up on one side, and down on the other depending on if you are tightening or loosening the chain.

yeah i realised i'd have to adjust those bolts after looking at it for a bit. theres two bolts though, would i first loosen the bolt furthest away from the axle, then adjust chain length with the bolt closest to the axle? and would an adjustable wrench be fine for it? its just that most places ive seen it talked about say to use fixed 10/11mm wrenches.
thanks mate though you've been really helpful. what do you think the problem could be with the gears? my explanation may not have been great
