Been mountain biking a while now. I'm ready I guess to start crunching miles on the road.

Budget is £1000. C2W scheme.

What is the best road bike I can presently get for the money?

Rumps.

Where can you buy from?

There's some good deals on 2012 models around at the moment.

For instance, I believe this is pretty good value: https://www.wiggle.co.uk/battaglin-c12-plus-veloce-2012/

But whether you want a £1900 rrp carbon framed bike is another matter, of course.

So might be worth mentioning the general purpose - will you actually be using it for commuting?

best option..

Ribble cycles...

as they build everything there they can do you a good deal and I know of one guy with a Carbon 105 set up thats cost him about 900 quid.

Its based around Preston area, but for a one of purchase its not too far from you.

I'd avoid anything online and go bricks n mortar purely so that you have somewhere to take it back to.

Regards Smile

Good general purpose bikes for mile munching/training/commuting and the odd bit of single track or towpath are cycle cross bikes. My everyday machine for yonks was a Specialized Tricross, bit more beefed up and a slightly relaxed frame.

2012 models as stated going cheap about now.

I do like the look of the Tricross - if I do get another drop-bar road bike (I previously had a CX) then I'd certainly consider one of them as they seem pretty 'do it all'.

sorry to go a bit off topic, but I too would like a road going bike. I ride my bicycle everywhere. Unless the weather was bad I used to ride to school, college, uni and work. I'll be starting a new job with the post office as a temp and was planning on cycling as I no longer have a car and will not be able to ride a motorbike or drive if I did get another car.
How does this cycle to work scheme work? From what I understand you make contributions out of your salary every month towards a bicycle. While you are making payments the bike is owned by the company and you are hiring the bike. When you have finished the payments does the bike become your property like at the end of a phone contract, or does it remain property of the employer? I would really like a road going bike as the single speed mountain bike really isn't that pleasant to be riding for 3.5/4miles each way

Yes its a salary sacrifice. You pay x amount per month for a 10 month period. Whilst doing this the bike remains the property of your company. At the end of the 10 month period you pay 20% of the outstanding balance on the bike and it then becomes yours.

Your NI contributions are also reduced for the duration of the scheme to sell the 'green, I'm saving the planet' aspect of this C2W scheme.

I'm a sucker for a traditional bike and I find the Genesis range very appealing. Clean lines, superb finish.

They get reviewed well too, usually something along the lines of "I didn't expect to like this because on paper it's too heavy and old fashioned but it is a thing of beauty and a delight to ride.".

If you want carbon: https://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/FBPXPRORIV12/planet_x_pro_carbon_rival_road_bike_2012

As mentioned I'd be tempted by a CAAD 10 if I could get one for that sort of money...

Stinky, you should take a look at Condor cycles they make some absolutely beautiful steel framed bicycles, as well as carbon etc.

If your scheme includes halfords and you're competent with checking the bike over yourself then you might want to look at the Boardman road bike range. I've got the road team (999.99) and it's a fantastic bike for the money. Very highly praised by all the bike reviews I've ever seen and pretty decent spec for the money. There is a bit of stigma attached to Boardman bikes in some circles due to the fact that most of the range is only available from halfords...

Totally agree, great bikes unfortunately let down by some pretty horrendous builds by some Halfords staff. If they were being sold by boutique dealers, they'd be a 'no brainier'.

I've had two Boardmans the first was set up perfectly fine. Unfortunately it got stolen from my office car park. The bike I have now came from a different branch than I'd used before. When I came to collect it the headset was loose, they'd not inflated the tyres to more than 40psi and they'd failed to cap the brake cables where they terminate at the caliper. Pretty shoddy setup on a grand bike. It pains me to recommend the Boardman range because of halfords but I think the merits of bike out weigh the poor service.

The problem with the cycle to work scheme is that it has pushed the prices of bike way up (that are still in the sub £1000 price bracket)

Here's the spec to the original boardman team carbon;

https://www.thebikelist.co.uk/boardman/road-team-carbon-2009

£999.99

The comp was pretty good too!

https://www.thebikelist.co.uk/boardman/road-comp-2009

£649.99 (I think it was sometimes discounted to 600)

(compared to the current spec: https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_789239_langId_-1_categoryId_165710)

All the best,

Joe

Ok I have narrowed it down to 3 possibilities.

I'm really not up on road bike specs. Would you guys tell me which is the better bike. I want all the bang I can for my buck.

My riding will be distance on the level, later attempting much more hilly terrain in the yorkshire dales.

Why? All have 105 gearing and the boardman is the only non carbon in the three. It does look sweet but then again so does the carrera.

Any other opinions anyone? I will be purchasing one of the three tomorrow morning.

Personally I'd go CAAD 10 or planet x if I had £1000.

Don't rush into a purchase from Halfords. It could be a major regret in a few months.

Get to bikeradar and check out the reviews, or better still get to a real bike shop and ask their advice.

There are some far better machines out there for that kind of money.

Not really that up on them.
Me, I'd still wait until there was a deal on for Halfords if going that way.

Note the boardman has 12-25 gearing while the Carrera has 12-28, so a little wider.

I was definitely appreciative of the 34-34 gearing on my hybrid (it has 50-11 max and 34-34 minimum, so wider on each end than the above) for a couple of silly-steep sections.

Specialised Allez comp is aluminium and about a grand..

what quality of carbon bike would you get for the same money ?

FTR I've got a Caad5, its awesome, rigid and pretty bulletproof

Well thanks for all your opinions guys, but I decided the best bet was to try the three I had earlier mentioned.

So off to both Halfords and Chevin.

The boardman looked nice, had all the high level componentry but just felt a little difficult to get moving. It may have been the tyre pressures I dunno. I was assured the tyres were correctly inflated.

The Mekk was lovely but just not as lovely as the picture I had earlier looked at would have led me to believe. Tiagra gearing too, so not as well specced as the other two.

Carrera Virago. Simple, stunning, clean looks. So so light. 8.6kg. 105 chainset and gears. Effortless to ride. Good adjustability in the stem and seat post too for a tall lad like me.

So I bought the Virago. Pick it up later this week.

I'm sure it was wiggle that used to do those bikes called 'focus', they always seemed to be really good value for what they were!

Also Cube bikes are nice.

You can't really go wrong getting a £1k bike from any main website, if there is discount then even better Thumbs Up
