I just got a voting card through to vote for a local police commisioner.

Just had a look to see who I could be voting for.

How am I supposed to decide who to vote for? I know fuck all about these people and they aren't letting me know. I've tried searching on the web and it's frankly, all a little thin.

I've managed to find out a little about them, but nothing more than a one paragraph statement off most of them.

One of them has a website but he's effectively scratched himself off my list because he's constantly banging on about enforcement. Enforcement means you've failed in my oppinion.

I feel I should vote, then I am entitled to complain if they turn out to be an arsehole but I also want to make sure one of them isn't a raving anti-speeding nazi. I have no information at all on their respective oppinions on traffic policing.

Anyone else even vaguely interested in this?

Card came through the door and briefly touched my hands on its journey to the bin.

I imagine the Government don't want a massive turnout for voting, so it makes it easier for them to put a PCC in place that suits them in their quest for privatising the Police, or is so weak as to do exactly what they suggest/tell them. Or something. Politics never really interested me.

It says I've got to wait until 26 October to get info about the candidates I can vote for. I'm surprised the info isn't easily available now. Still, only 4 days to go.

For all you know, Richard Brunstrom could be standing for commissioner in your area on a platform of zero tolerance on speeding and fitting tazer launchers to the front of traffic cars for use on motorcyclists with small number plates.

VOTE GORDON

https://i48.tinypic.com/1gkiup.jpg

IF YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU

Eh, I'd imagine that any "Commissioner" will be just passing through on the way to a larger trough, and will essentially be a catspaw for a larger vested interest.

As far as I understand it, their only real power will be to sack and appoint Chief Constables. Well, that's a pretty blunt instrument, and if one of them is ever deluded enough to believe that they can actually do it - unless it's at the behest of the Sun, the Grauniad and the Daily Hate combined - I expect they'll quickly be made aware of how token their role actually is.

We're not even getting them in Jockland, but then again, we're getting a single PlodForce anyway next year, so I guess the responsible individual would be our Justice Meenister or whatever we have.

Just like I'd do if the "right guy" got elected and started acting like a cunt as well.

b) I'm oblivious to anything the force does around here.

Quite possibly.

Won't make any difference to the way I act, whatever the scenario.

Seems like they're trying to mimic the way they elect sheriffs in some parts of the USA, works fine in a small town in Texas where everyone's on first name terms with the candidates, but over here? Bloody ridiculous idea.

Hetz, mate.......

You dont like how things are run yet you wont vote for the best of a bad bunch.

IF you did vote then and the person you voted for didn't win your vote still shows as "support for a candidate's views" which does affect, albeit a small amount, the actions of the winning candidate.

Complain about the country - Does nothing about it?

I'm surprised you havent trawled the net looking for info on each of the candidates to say why each one is a muppet, we all know they are muppets, but reasons would be awesome.

All the candidates in my neck of the woods are party political toadies looking for a bigger trough for their snouts. The 'favourite' here is the twat who wasted nine point something million pounds on the ill thought out 20mph signs that are spewing forth all over the shop. Thumbs Down

2 Jags Prescott is likely to be the elected commissioner here.

He has the massive advantage that he's the only candidate anyone will have heard of.

Only the party supported candidates can afford campaign literature etc so it's pretty much a rigged election anyway.

I'm pretty sure the whole point of having a police force is for enforcement.

I'm of the opinion that if you don't vote, you no longer deserve to bitch about how things go.

I realise you are of much the same opinion, stinkwheel, the above was aimed more at people like hetzer and so on.

If you don't vote, don't bitch. If you don't like a system, conspiracy theorists on youtube won't fix it. The only way to fix it is to get hand to hand with it.

Also worth mentioning, if you live in London, you don't get to cast a vote.

Because fuck you, that's why.

Godfrey Bloom is pretty well known. Not quite sure why they are both taking on the Humberside seat when they could just take on different seats and both win one. Especially strange is that they both stand for Humberside of all places, containing such sewers in the middle of nowhere as Hell, Grim-sby, and sCunthorpe. I've never heard the residents say anything good about the place.

Because it's part of the London Mayor's job.

I shall be proudly casting a spoiled ballot paper with the words "This is a waste of money" across it.

I am just incensed that the government see this as a good thing to do; bringing politics into policing is just crazy.

As most of you have found out, there is no comparison to be made between them, the web is dry of these 'squeaky clean' candidates, nothing from the local fishwrapper and there's no Obama vs Romney style shootout shown on telly to allow us to pick. So what is the point?

Top tip: change your name to "Gene Hunt" before going on the ballot.

inksmithy wrote:

Nope.

Bobbie Peel, and he should know, wrote:
The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with it.

Detecting and sanctioning a crime after it's happened is a poor substitute for "I've got my eye on you" deterrence. It's like judging the performance of a zoo keeper based on how many escaped animals he re-captures.

This is why target led policing is so abhorrent - they're sent out to find a quota of crimes and ticket them. Not finding crimes should be the preferred outcome.
