Someone nicked my tax disc a couple weeks ago, so I'm just wondering if i could still do my test (mod1 / 2) without displaying it?

If not could i just borrow a friends tax disc, he has the same bike as me.

No, and no.

If you need it immediately, you could buy another at the post office. What are they, £16?

My examiner wasn't concerned about tax or insurance etc... when I did my bike test. I just had to confirm it was taxed and insured, but it wasn't checked.

I've not carried my tax on my bike for well over two years and had no problems

You do know you can buy a tax disc at most post offices?

Google royal mail, they have a branch finder that should tell you the nearest place to buy one Rolling Eyes

Or.. don't worry.

I haven't displayed a tax disk in yonks. My GSXR which I had in 2011 was showing a 2007 tax disk.

I never displayed one for my test.

Is it worth risking losing test fee for not having it?

Since you have tax on the bike, could you scan your friends into a computer and change the reg on photoshop/paint/etc and print it out. You could then say to any cops that you don't keep your real one on the bike incase someone steals it. Unlikely to get noticed anyway especially through a tax disc holder.

Not strictly legal, but will anyone know?

If you don't wanna do that, £16 is not much to fork out, and it'll give you a full 12 months from when you buy another

Eh, no. Really, no. Post office, £16, job done. You'll make it back when you sell the bike.

Had mine stolen st Gatwick the other week. If you print out and fill in this form, take it to your local DVLA office along with your V5, hand over £7, then they will give you a replacement there and then.

https://www.gov.uk/apply-duplicate-tax-disc

Must admit, was a bit pissed off I had to pay £7 'cause some scroat nicked it. Evil or Very Mad

New tax disc came in the post for the car in Februaryl...... put it on the shelf to put in the window when I had a mo......

Month or so later, my mother visited, put her keys down and when she went to pick them up spotted the tax disc and made big fuss about me putting it in the car there and then....

MOTHERS! Rolling Eyes

Anyway, after putting it in.... I looked, and it DIDN'T look right..... but couldn't quite fathom what was wrong.... anyway, mother was happy.

Month LATER mother turns up again, same thing , finds tax disc on shelf, makes song and dance about it! "But you WATCHED me put it in!" I said....

We went out, and that 'Thing' that was 'wrong' with the tax disc suddenlty became apparent...... it said 04-2012....

Well, BEING 2012, that seems right, doesn't it? But nope, years tax fitted in 2012 should say 2013!

Been driving around ALL YEARF without displaying LAST years tax disc! Shocked

Anyway.... yes, there are two offences:-

- Using or Allowing to be a used a vehicle for which no tax is in force
- Failing to display valid tax disc.

Since their integrated DVLA data-base giving police access, they aren't so bothered to check the actual disc on the vehicle, they call it up on thier in car computer when they check its insured etc.

Failure to display is the preserve of clampers and parking wardens, and they do seem to have purges on this still; there was a bit of a foraur around here a while back when a clamping contractor for DVLA came round and clamped loads of untaxed cars in residential communal parking areas!?!?

DISPLAYING is a requirement of teh Road-Traffic act though, and an examiner COULD legitimately refuse test for missing disc, same as if he doesn't like the look of your tyres, or the ball is missing off the end of your brake lever.......

So before test, save risk of losing fee and slot, worth giving it a going over as if sending it for an MOT, make sure t's crossed, i's dotted etc.

Tax discs can be bought over the counter at post offices (if you can find one in your county these days!), instantly, you don't have to wait for them to come through the post.

There used to be a caveat for applying for tax disc by post, and if you tax 'on-line' there are instructions for you to print the receipt number and display that... and its legitimate substitute and proof that vehicle is taxed.

TIP: if you are worried M/C tax disc may get nicked....... tax on-line, print & display the receipt number, 'forget' to fit actual tax disc when it comes.......

Tax discs are archaic. If I lose mine, I'm not gonna give a fuck. I paid for my year, they have it on record. If they check my bike and there's no tax disc, what are they gonna do? Report it as untaxed, then discover it's taxed!

I do have a tax disc. But if I lose it, that's how I'll feel. And I won't pay for a new one until its year is up.

What would be more reliable in this modern age? Wardens manually checking every vehicle for a tax disc (therefore having to check VERY close for the details to make sure it's not a copied one), or having a wireless device to punch in (or maybe automatically scan) number plates, which would immediately see if the vehicle is taxed on the database?

Hmm!

I honestly believe, aside from central London, HM Government needs to up its game in terms of modernity.

i like the german system where it's applied via the registration plate. (i think that's how theirs works) seems safer.

Not admitting to printing a fake tax disc, but merely claiming it to be a colour photocopy of your original tax disc, which is kept safe with your vehicle documents.

Whether they accept it or not, I'm sure most of them would at least understand the reasoning if you justify it.

You crazy fool, you're making me cite the law. See what thou hast wrought?

You're expecting reasonable behaviour from a copper who's already taken an interest in your vehicle? Best of luck with that.

Beats me. So what if it gets nicked? You're no worse off than you were keeping it in a drawer. Either way, DVLA know it's taxed, either way you're committing the (risible) offence of not displaying.

I wen for my mod 1 on Monday and the examiner inspected my bike (cbf125) before he would let me do the test. The week before I tried mod1 at a different test centre and they didn't even bother so I guess it depends on the examiner, but why take a chance.

Slight twist on previous post:

Tax online, fit the disc when it arrives and IF it gets nicked display the online booking confirmation.

Yes. They shouldn't be able to though, not now everything is on electronic database and so easily accessible.

They SHOULD do away with tax discs, but whether they will or not is another matter.

I mean we don't have to carry around insurance certificates or driving licences, so why a tax disc?

Since when? Database doesn't do away with the need to hold a current and correct card and counterpart, together with insurance certificate - if it did then neither would be issued.

They are still required and legally you are still required to carry them. The 7 day wander is actually still alive and kicking.

Not worth it. Even if the examiner doesn't notice or care, you are still breaking the law. Copying tax discs is the same penalty, whether it's £16 for a 125, or a £400 high-polluting car. it's viewed on in the same way if you were stopped by the Police. Not sure if it invalidates insurance or anyhting if you ever had an off, but I wouldn't risk it.
