Hi!
I just passed my theory test.. i've been ridding every day a lot for few months and i was thinking about booking mod1 soon!
I would like to know from experienced rider if:
1 is it possible to pass mod 1 and 2 without having a professional training? as i would be happy to save 500 quid fee for instructors..
2 theres any sort of guide i can buy or download about the practical test?
i've been watching some videos on youtube and it doesnt seem to be very hard to pass!
any thoughts?
cheers Thumbs Up

If you look at each stage of the Mod 1 and think you can do it - go for it.
Like you say, the youtube vids give you all the ideas you need.

Mod 2 is a 45min-ish rideout where the examiner is looking for correct road positioning, observation checks before you perform manoeuvres, speed awareness and general road safety.

If your confident and feel you can do it, do it.

I believe its commonly referred to on here as the 'man's pass'. Thumbs Up

I'd say a good 30% to 40% of people on here took their tests with no training.

Check this out for useful tips;

Mod 1 is easy, I done it first time, no instructor.
I used an empty car park to practice as the spaces between the cones on the test (slalom and figure of 8) are the distance of 2 parking spaces.

Just imagine cones are on the tips of the white lines.

But I failed the Mod 2 a few times without any instruction - ended up costing me the same as DAS lol!

Have you passed or booked your motorcycle theory test? You'll need to pass it before you can book mod 1.

You have until January 19th 2013 to get a worthwhile license by passing on a 125. If you miss that date, then to get a decent license you'll need to be 19+ and have access to a 395cc+ 25-35kW bike, or 24+ with a 595cc+ 40kW+ bike.

Reckon you can make it before then? To have any chance, book your motorcycle theory online today.

I am 37, and after driving for 20 years got myself a 125 for the comute. Did cbt and rode for 3 months then decided to take the test.
I just downloaded the mod 1 set up, and practiced in a local cinima car park. Passed mod 1 fine.
Then i just got as much info as possible about procedures etc for mod 2 and practiced again around town. However, a week before the test i actualy had an hours lesson just to clear up a few questions.
I would highly recomend doing that as he actually simplified a lot of the stuff i was doing.
Some youtube videos have you doing lifesavers all over the the place which makes things complicated.
Also the guy pointed out the important things to think about in order to 'pass', and took me on a couple of likely routes.
The lesson also filled me a lot of confidence, knowing what i was doing was relevent to the test.

Good luck!!!

Urm, yes it will. After Jan the option to do the tests on a 125 for a restricted license won't exist. Doing the tests on a 125 will give you a license for a 125, that's all, forever, until you take another test on a bigger bike.

Then you may just have time to pass the tests on a 125. You will need to do both modules before January 19th 2013 or you lose the option to get a (worthwhile) license on your own 125, sorry.

Mod 1 is £15.50, you're as well just having a go. At least see when you can get one booked, and then decide whether you want to go via a training school and their pre-booked slots.

If you do go down the training school route, you might as well do DAS tests, since it will only cost marginally more but will bypass the restriction and the accompanying license and insurance hassles.

You don't have to get anything crazily powerful, and 25kW is fine for UK road use. However, it's nice to have just a bit more on tap when you want it - to complete an overtake safely, for example.

If the choice is do it on own 125 vs. do DAS with school, then the cost is not just marginally more, but immensely more, as you have to pay for what is effectively a lesson charged by the hour, riding the bike from the school premises to the test centre, the instructor's time while he sits there having a brew, and the journey back.

Cost is part of this and, yes, using one's own 125 vs a school's 500 and DAS is different in cost but there is more to it.

Also, the duplicitous bastards in the EU could change things again whereas gaining the license ASAP may render grandfathering a benefit as anyone that did the 'examiner walks while testee ( Wink ) runs around the block' kind of test will surely vouch for. Smile
