Is the area you live in quiet enough during the day for you to be able to enjoy uninterrupted rest and sleep?

Also whats the job?

Will it keep you entertained all through the night or will you be bored and falling asleep 2 hours into your shift?

Doing full time night work is easier than doing Shift work IME.

Yea. Sleep through the day...

It's not difficult but some people struggle with it for some reason. Each to their own I guess. I much prefer 4 on / 4 off 12 hour shifts to working 9-5 Monday - Friday.

I did nights for 10 years solid.
Only 8 hour shifts but they started on a Sunday night, which I never got used to, and finished on Friday morning.
The only real day off I got was Saturday.
Ok, the money was good but I really don't miss them at all and don't think I'd ever go back unless I had no choice.
My quality of life now is so much better.
Nights is a younger man's game. Wink

When I did nights I steered clear of energy drinks, pro plus and other stimulants. I found eating a proper nourishing healthy meal beforehand and having home made butties for my break helped. Make sure you have plenty of water to drink.

Can't you ask your boss if you can do it on a trial basis to see how you cope with it, then review the situation after?

First off, if it will get you an in house contract i'd say go for it regardless!

The main thing is structuring sleep, I struggle with waking up and if theres nothing urgent I tend to stay asleep, which was a bit of a pain as I was working 10-6 then sleeping till 4/5 leaving me not much time left in the day, so structure your time asleep!

My sleep strategy was get in from work at about 6.20am and then try to stay awake until about 12.30pm (not easy if you have nothing to do so I owe a lot to Modern Warfare. Can't remember what I did before that!).
I'd be well ready for bed by then and I'd get a good 7-8 hours sleep a day.
When I got up it used to feel like morning and it meant I had more energy during the shift.
Once I got over the Sunday night shift, the rest of the week was relatively easy.
I also adjusted all my food patterns so that I was eating cereal just before work, taking sandwiches etc to work and then having a 'light tea' at about 7.30am.
Sounds weird but you get used to it. Wink

Whenever I do night I found it easier to shit my day round - for example:

Night shift 2200-0600
Stay up from 0600-1200
Sleep 1200-2000

then get up and go to work! It essentially made the night shift an "early" shift and I found that getting up from bed and then going to work meant I stayed fresh during the night.

Luckily I don't do it very often any more, but on the odd weeks I do I still try to follow this pattern. Only problem is that it's a bit antisocial if you have a missus/mates/kids you want to see in the evenings.

Thumbs Up

Worked nights for the past 2 years 11pm-7am, personally I struggle with sleep and rearly get more than about 5 - 5 1/2 hours sleep a day (Get about 3 hours when I get home then the rest about 7pm). I do get to sit on my arse all night and chill on the net/watch films on laptop/ipod so not all bad but would definately say get something to keep yourself awake. I even had a remote control car for a few weeks which I would just build ramps/courses for and generally mess with, also find puzzle books quite good.

Working nights has a definate physiological effect on you, some bigger contractors are doing assessments now to make sure people aren't geting affected too badly.

I work night for extended periods someties, and so long as there's no break in them I can get into the routine quite well. Being able to sleep well helps. I see many permanent-nights guys develop a sickly pallour (and a sullen demeanour to go with it) and I'm sure it's to do with not getting out in the sunshine enough.
Try it and see how you get on. You might find it better if you use earplugs and put an old mobile under your pillow on vibrate to wake you up. One definate advantage if you have a family that eat dinner together is that you'll go to work with a nice big meal in you and burn it off through the night, rather than the usual stuff yourself then sit all evening on your backside getting fat.

I've been doing night for over a year now and found it really easy. The first shift is a bitch but I try and sleep for a good few hours before and that makes it easier.

I tend to go to the gym straight after at 8AM do some cardio and knacker myself out, go home have a bit of food and sleep like a baby.

Full-time nights will be reasonably easy to adapt to. I work two earlies, two lates, and two nights, which is difficult to get used to. I do enjoy working nights though, there's something satisfying about coming home and crawling into bed when everyone else is on their way out to work.

You will find your way of managing it. Some people, like qb78, will stay up and have an "evening" as such, then go to bed and wake up ready for work.

I tend to fall into bed as soon as I get home, then wake up in the afternoon and have a few hours to myself before work. (This one's a bit easier if you want to have a life as you can still see friends in the evenings and things.)

Do get a blackout blind or curtains though, because it's near impossible to sleep when your body knows it's daytime and wants you to be awake!

Did it for 6 months. Found it to be a pain in the ass personally because you end up missing out on stuff socially. However if you don't care about the social thing then go for it.

The night shift people where I work are a bit weird. They are easily spotted as they will be chugging a pint can of Monster and chain smoking outside while complaining how they do lots more work than day shifters.

For me, I can't see the point, you'll be really anti social and on your holidays and days off it'll just mess your sleeping pattern up. It's all down to the money really, that's the only reason people do it.
