ok this is on a suzuki gt185 year 1974

about 2 hours ago i took the carbs off to clean them i got them both stripped down and stuck them in a bowl of petrol and started to clean with a cloth and a tooth brush after making sure they wer both clean i put them back together and stuck them back on the bike, put everything back together as it was b4.

started the bike up was fine for about 5 mins i revved it a bit and the revs went right round the clock and i had to hit the cut of switch so i looked at the throttle cables and made sure they were all in how they should be then i started it up again and i heard a loud band a bit like a fire work but higher pitched i think it came from the exaust not sure but i saw a bit of clear smoke coming from under the petrol tank so i gave it another look over and started it again. it fired up perfect but then the revs flew round the clock again. so then i had a nother look tryed starting it and i heard a nother band and more smoke Sad does any one have any idea what this could be i told my dad i would clean his carbs for him and it seems iv just destroyed his bike Mad

I did this on a CG125. You know the throttle cable going into the top of the carb? It sounds like you've put the springy needle carrier thingy in back to front. The ramp upon which the idle screw acts should be on the same side as the idle screw.

Edit: if it is in back to front, the needle doesn't seat properly, so it's just letting the fuel out fast as the engine can suck it. If it's not this, then I haven't a clue, but the racing engine part after disassembling and reassembling carbs sounds like it.

Yes, it's an old one, and belongs to my Mum actually, it was a bitch to start as it's only got a kick, and when it did go it didn't so much bang as just go out of control straight away, and I'd have to turn the ignition off. I thought I'd broken it, and just couldn't understand why. I'd make sure the screw cap through which the cable runs is properly done up too.

The round ones will turn and fit in 180 degrees from where they should be as well though. Make sure the ramp is on the same side as the idle screw and you can eliminate incorrect reassembly.

It is easy to put the slides in back-to-front on some carbs, I've done it myself. The bang in the exhaust could be un-burnt fuel exploding when it sparks.

My bike had a problem virtually identical to this. It turns out when I replaced the carb after a clean, I hadn't seated it in the manifold properly and it was leaking air (well more sucking in too much Smile ). It might be worth you having a look at this too Thumbs Up

I agree, drawing in air on the mainfold side of the carb could also be the problem. I had a problem with a DT125 last year where it was drawing air through the manifold. If I got it into the powerband (2-stroke engine you see) it would rev uncontrollably, even the kill switch wouldn't stop it. I had to jam on the brakes to slow the engine down. Shocked

I think the key thing here is that (I presume) it's doing it from standstill, as soon as it is started (clarification needed). Putting the carb slide in back to front certainly causes this as I have found in the past. Whether the problem was solved or not is unclear as the last post referring to this was the overflow pipe pissing petrol in the way these things seem to..

Surely it is an air leak?

Ie the carb is not on tight enough or not on right so it is sucking in air.

One way or another the engine is getting either too much air or too much petrol.

An old friend of mine had a similar problem years ago on his RD400 (air cooled). Cool
He had rebuilt the carbs and as we found out later, VERY MUCH LATER, had put the left throttle slide in the right hand carb and visa versa, this ment that the tick-over screw was stopping the slide from seating properly, thus causing it to "REV IT'S NUT'S OFF"
You will find that your carbs are "HANDED", check to see if thats the problem, if it was, dont kick your-self, just look at it as a challenge that you beat. Cool
