Honda CF70 (chaly in a bad way)

I started a similar thread a long time ago, but it no longer bares any relationship to where I am, so I'll start again

Back in the day (70's), my wife (then girl freind) purchased a second hand Chaly (2 years old), and that bike changed hands about 5 times and all within the family, it was that loved. So when I saw this poor looking sole on fleabay last year I just had to save her.

The guy told me him and his mates had been using this one and an ST50 he was also selling on the local fields, however the field had now been built on, so it was time to sell them (lucky for the chaly).
Getting her home was no bother, fits in the back of the focus estate, no bother. Got her out of the boot, and two kicks later and she fired up, took her around the farm till she ran out of fuel, followed by a long walk/push home...Still at least I know the engines a goer.

Investigating I found no battery, no ignition, lights etc (guess he didnt want them on for field jumping) and wiring that looks like the crows have had a go at it.

So strip down and paint (well that was the idea), then found due to the use on the fields the front forks were bent, so I took them off for straightening by a local firm, and set about stripping her down and priming.

Then let rip with some rattle cans (BIG MISTAKE)

And that was where she sat, on the back burner whilst the CD175 and FZ50 took center stage, but now shes back on the bench.

First thing I found was the damn paint (even though it was sprayed with 5 coats of clear laquer) was scratched where things in the workshop had brushed against it, oh crap, still after using 2k on the CD175 and being very happy with the finish, I set about removing it all.

Also broke down the wheels and sand blasted them (diy), and painted them.

And so here we go again, so a rebuild of a rebuild...

A few things have come to light whilst pulling all the parts together over the last few days, including when the V5 finaly arrived from DVLA (I had to re-apply as after 3 months nothing turned up, luckilly I had the V5 new owner slip). Turns out she was registerd as BLUE (not black), yet the original black paint was original, strange. Also got a letter with the V5 from DVLA gods requiring a vat registered garage to verify the engine serial number, so the engine has been changed. More digging and it looks like the engine now installed is from a C70 step-thru, no problem, except totally wrong carb and 6Volt CDI (bit of a bonus that one). Also this particular model of Chaly uses handle bar front and rear brakes (cables), BUT the stop and pivot point for the foot brake are present, so I'm going to convert her to foot brake, also this model featured a square headlamp and indicators, again not on my gal, she is going to have a round lamp and chrome indicators.

I know a lot of people take the Chaly and the ST70 and modify them with ally forks, disk brakes, bigger engines etc, but I'm not, I want her to look like she belongs in the 70's not the naughties.

Ahh happines is a paintjob free of runs (finally), plus a new phenomenum craters !!!! it turns out when I was spraying with my new compressor, even though I have an oil/water trap/filter in situ, it was still spraying oil, I got one of those little filters that goes into the actual spary gun (in line), and bingo 4th re-spray and its a lesson learnt.....

Next time to get the forks back in, I use AK45 grease since I read how this stuff unlike other grease actually replells water and moisture, unlike other grease that traps it in!!!

Looks like an awesome build!

I'll be updating mine soon as I've got a slightly less modern front end for it. Non-oil, Sprung only 33mm USD forks. Stock style.
I'll be keeping the disc brake though.




Your frame looks really clean. Mine has got pitting all over it from years and years of damp garage storage etc.
Even after having it shot blasted, it's left pitting marks.
All adds to the character I guess.

It's a kind thought mate, but I'm pretty much kitted out front end wise now. Just had a custom machined lower yoke for them too.

If you need any bits modifying, or any spacers/adapters making up which you cant source/buy any more, let me know, Gaz56 (doesnt come on here any more) is a machinist, a good one at that. He's made LOADS of parts for my chaly.

Just a quick update (after a few years lol)

I decided to change the rear brake from handlebar operated to a foot brake, and as a result had to also change all this lot , also required the front brake switch to be replaced with the integrated cable switch(will it ever end lol).

Also cant find the rear bracket that holds the rear light and number plate, and I gather there as rare as hens teeth, so gonna have to look harder.

Glad to see this is still alive.

My Chaly is now completely rebuilt, for the third time since I bought it.
Kinda pink now too.

Once you're finished, we'll have to meet up at one of the Monkey Runs.

Maybe a bit late now but you do know a pre 1986 bike only needs the brake light to come on with one of the brakes, not both of them?
