MZ 250 fork circlips?

I had to replace the fork seals on my MZ ETZ250, after taking the forks appart I noticed there was no circlips in either fork to go over the seals. Not even a lip inside.


I wondered this must be normal then, but it's the first bike i've come accross with this situation and I ask myself could I really trust the seals not to ride up?


Looking up past MOT's on the interwebs I noticed the only record for one was last June which it passed, However does that give reason to believe it hasn't been used for many years prior to that date? and in that give cause to the seals just going with age and then sudden use from a long period of rest?

Not unusual.

The seals on my beemer are not retained by any circlips.

I was thinking, would it be worthwhile to machine a groove in which to place a circlip?

I cant think of any other application where oil seals of this type are held in with circlips. Most oil seals are simply push /hammered into place. If there are no circlip grooves then the manufacturer never fitted circlips.......

On this type of fork the seal is retained by being a tight fit in the slider. No clip required.

Try and get the buggers out, then decide if it needs a circlip.
