Now that I've got your attention, is it really so hard to insta-ban new accounts if their first post triggers a few common keywords?

See also: handbags.

I can't even be arsed Spam rating them any more, and I'm sure the mods are sick to the back teeth of deleting them.

Or maybe a massive karma hit if your first few posts contain certain words.

Make it so you can't submit a post containing a URL or hyperlink until your 6th post?

Spammers want you to visit their website, if they can't do that, they're not interested. It would take a pretty determined spammer to go and make six posts before they can hit you with the goods.

If someone really wants/needs to put a link in in one of their first six posts, the option of typing it in as bikechatforums dot com is always there.

Perhaps strip the <a> tags from anyone's first five posts as well as instaban them if the first few posts contain the same content, or a set percentage of the post is identical to previous posts.

ban any new signups from gmail addresses and the spam will drop by 99% instantly.

If gmail users really want to join then getting a hotmail or other account won't be any bother.

I get stroppy emails from gmail users moaning that it's far too much trouble to get a different email address to sign up but it's fine for me to have to delete a daily barrage of spammers accounts if i allow gmail accounts.

Have it so that if x poster gets x amount of spam ratings their account is suspended. They get an automatic PM asking them to contact a Mod to reinstate their posting privileges which of course they won't respond to.

Obviously, while their account is suspended all posts are automatically hidden.

None of these seem to be set up from 'disposable' Gmail/Hotmail accounts, so disallowing those wouldn't help much. The new trick seems to be hijacking people's legit email accounts (via keylogger or crap-password-guessing, I'd assume) and signing up for forum accounts with those... There does seem to be a big rise of it lately, not just on BCF but on other forums I look after as well.

The best thing you can do is Thumbs Down Spam rate any posts which aren't already hidden and wait for a mod to nuke the entire account.

Can you not implement a system where the first 5 posts a new poster makes have to be approved by a mod?

I know a few sites which do this and it keeps the spam away Thumbs Up

We do this on another site.
We usually wait until about 5 posts before they are released from moderation and then wait until at least 10 posts before access to sales is approved (although certain other criteria has to be met first).
We get no spam at all. Thumbs Up

Maybe copy b3ta and have something called Rookie Tuesdays?

Where you're allowed to read and browse the forums, but not to post anything till the next tuesday.

Or for new people put in some sort of verification which only bikers will know.

Something like Doohan's first name is M___

Or give me the ability to nuke accounts! As I'm often here 6am-8am and see the tranches of spam!.

...also see also: Western Union.

By their words shall ye know them. There really does appear to be a case for replacing much of the manual spam moderation with a Very Small Php Script.

That sounds like more hassle for the mods than deleting the spam, to be honest.

If we don't delete the spam straight away, it doesn't actually stop anyone from using the forum. If we all have a life and don't approve someone's new posts for 2 days, they'll probably never come back.

Agreed, those fora that insist on jumping through hoops to post must be pretty lonely places.

Isn't there some form of spam assassin for fora? Seems to be a need for one.

So anyhow Roger, about these kitchens. Do you offer a design service and how much would delivery be?

Plus are the handbags actually real leather?

Hi

Spammers are easy to delete if people just mark them as spam and do not reply to them (not point nuking a spammers account if we then have to delve around trying to find the places where someone has quoted them to slag them off).

Captcha seems pretty useless to me. Stops real people before it stops spammers most of the time.

On a few forums I run I have started to use a spammer checking web site before allowing people to register. This has pretty much stopped them all except for one person who was manually registering (and blocking their IP address has finished them off). Will probably add another check soon to stop people registering or posting via any known proxy servers (or at least until they have done X real posts).

All the best

Keith

Not always the case as they are still left in some threads https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=85257&start=150.

Hi

Now nuked. If hidden in the middle of a thread and not spotted by a mod then pm us (or just me). But whatever anyone does, please do not reply to them or quote them.

All the best

Keith
