NS 125 RK

i got this bike with the help of snorty must say a big thanks to him and drew good fellas the both of them....

Part of a grander plan the first thing is to get this bike ready for its mot as quick as possible, i will then take my cb off the road fully restore the cb then take the ns off the and fully restore it too.

Trying to restore a bike while needing to use it daily as i have found is very difficult so when the ns came up it was perfect timing for me. the bike itself is mechanically ok but cosmetically shocking here is a couple of pics of how she looks.

First thing was to remove the panels and fuel tank, both rear panels are cracked and broken so will be replaced or repaired at a later date.
The first thing i wanted to test was the water system after looking in the rad and seeing this,

So i rinsed out the rad and cap and all the gunge came out easily so i made a little rig to rinse out the hoses and make sure there is no gunge in engine.

I also charged the battery and cleaned and checked the fuel lines (the filter is goosed). I was surprised to find the battery in good nick and responded well to charging.

While doing all this i noticed one of the engine mounting bolts is missing a nut and the battery cage is broken so repairing them is on the list for tomorrow and i plan to have the bike running on its own fuel tank also. if theres time i will also fit a see through hose to the 2 stroke pump so i can see if it works properly but for today...... That is all

Day 2

I decided to start by checking the 2 stroke pump was working correctly, so i started by removing the engine casing,

First thing to see is it has one bolt missing in the casing, hmmmm must replace that

All looks pretty clean but the eagle eyed will see a nut missing from the rear top engine mount.

So i replaced the nut for the rear engine mount and then changed the hose from the 2 stroke pump to the carb for a clear one, for one so i can the the oil working its way through verifying its operation and second for my own piece of mind i can be sure the oil is being fed by a visual check.

Then all was left was to replace the casing and replace the bolt

i am now satisfied at this time the pump and water systems are good but just before i started on checking and cleaning the fuel system the heavens opened and rain stopped play. So instead i decided to attack them clocks on the front of the bike,
With condensation in the clocks and a "floppy" bracket and dodgy lighting i thought i would take them inside and see what is what.

removal of the clocks is easy enough 4 bolts and unplug the wiring , love the wiring block in the headlight and it is obvious the damage to the bracket,

this will hopefully be repaired but before i try i will make a template in case i have to fabricate a new one, after a quick scan of the clocks in hand i must say i love mr hondas design on this one. Four screws on the back and one screw in the trip meter and the whole thing just split in two.

at this point rather chuffed cleaned the water out of the inside and reversed the process to put it back together, and now i can see the speedo and the milage.

now weather Dependant tomorrow i am hoping to fix the bracket and the battery tray and hopefully clean out the fuel tank ready for new fuel lines and new fuel filter.

Day 3

Another day and more work on the ns, What i would like to achive is the repair of the clock bracket and battery tray. Also the battery negetive lead needs to be repaired and the fuel system still requires cleaning.

To start with i made a template of the bracket in case anything goes wrong i can make a new one at a later date,

Then after cleaning off the joining surfaces i clamp the two pieces together and make my first ugly but functional weld

I can then remove the clamp and make another seriously ugly but functional weld.

All that remains is to clean up the welds a little and give a coat of paint to prevent rusting

Next i turn my attention to the battery box, in very rough condition with 2 broken mounting points one at the bottom to mount to the frame and one at the side to attach the water bottle i begin making these.

Then i drill the new mounts to make a simple but effective nut and bolt fix.

Once this is done i again paint to avoid (anymore) corrosion,

Another mount the top stud is snapped

so i drill out the stud and add a new nut and bolt for the final securing and refit both the battery tray/water bottle and the clock mount

Due to family emergency's this is all today but so far no cost in parts as i had everything i needed up to now, and just the fuel system, rear exhaust hanger and battery lead to do tomorrow up to now, Also see if i can salvage my clutch lever. then i think i will have to start buying some parts and ready her for the mot.

Day 4

To start with i have a broken lead to the negative on the battery,

Simple and easy fix for now but later will strip back and solder en a new lead

Next is a little fabricating, as you can see in the next pic the pillion foot rests are missing, this is not a problem but the back mount to the exhaust hangs on the right side of the bike also,

So i make a simple card template and trace to some sheet steel.

this bike now officially has the blood put into it, the covered finger is pretty deep the other is just skinned but not one to shy away another disc and its now in shape

So i clean off the metal and drill the mounting holes and put some paint on it, it is then ready to fit to the bike

Then i flush through the fuel tank and refit it and its starting to look like a bike again. though it is not running on its own tank at the moment as i need a new filter and fuel line,

So now i have a list of things specifically for the mot test, but some need diagnosing first. firstly the rear brakes, they are practical none exsistant i suspect shoes.

Next is the front brakes very hard and plenty of pressure but no stopping power, i suspect either the pads/pistons are seized or the brake line is badly kinked as snorty said when i bought the bike,

The front fork oil seals are leaking so need to replace them.

A variety of bulbs need replacing.

Some form of tail tidy needs to be put on and a new number plate as the one on there is too small also a set of rear indicators and it will be ready to go.

Coming along slowly but surely. I used to have a fair few NS models when I was a lad, preferred the F model but also had a NSR125RK with twin headlights, enclosed fairing, electric start and windmill wheels brand new in 1990, red, white and blue, loved it. Keep up the good work

Day 5

Today i was going to have a lazy day and leave the bike alone, but these arrived in the post for my clocks.

So i decided to fit them to the clocks and fit the clocks, even with the dodgy looking welds the rubbers fit back in well

Even though all the bulbs have been replaced half the lights dont work for some reason so i had a look at the connecting block

Seems like this may be the problem so i will try to clean it up i will also wire it up manually and test the circuit that way. So to test the circuit i cut 10 lengths of metal just over an inch long and slotted them into the blocks the same way the connector block goes

Still no luck with some of the lights but others work now so i think i need to clean all the connectors and check all the wiring to the clocks. it seems to be all the headlight lives not giving any power and also the neutral light so there is the place to start.
I started out by testing the wiring with all the lights and first was the neutral light just being a dicky bulb and replaced and that works fine, i carried on and there was no feed at all on the brown wire so i opened it up and this is what i found

so i temporary repaired the wire and fit it all back to the bike

you cant really see but all the lights are now working so this can be soldiered up and repaired when i can get my new soldering kit.
Now i just need to do the fault finding with the brakes replace any parts there, the front fork oil seals, solder up the repair to the clocks and battery and finally the numberplate set up with rear indicators and it should be ready for the mot

Day 6

Today i thought i would do some fault finding, Working round ranting at work for not getting paid again, So very little time to do anything so i decided to look at the back brakes first of all.

as you see from the picture the rear brake is fully adjusted with very little brake affect taking place this to my mind says either the brake pads are very badly worn or the brakes are very poorly set up. After removing the wheel and looking at the brakes i have found several issues that will need addressing,

Firstly the shoes dont look too bad so the lack of any effectiveness looks to be down to poor adjustment, no matter these will be replaced ready for the test due to the next issue i found.

As you can see from this picture the scoring on the drum means at some point the pads have run down so far and damaged drum itself, hopefully this will be salvageable and will look into the options i have available. Also you may see in the pic the final problem better demonstrated by the following video

The wheel bearings are goosed and it even looks like the wrong bearing has been put into this particular bike, i will have to do some research and the wheel may even need refurbishing or even replacing, anyone with any ideas on this one i will be sure to take on board

There will be no work done for a few days on this machine now as need parts and while i wait for them to arrive or be ordered i took my rear wheel to my local bike shop (transit motorcycles)

me and 2 of there guys looked over the wheel and the bearings and the drum and the verdict was unanimous. Even though the bearing space is slack it can be remedied with some "stuff" they had in stock made for that job but the drum is so badly scored that no repair to this wheel is viable.

So anyone out there with a spare NS 125 rear wheel could you please pm me see if we can arrange something.

Also let this be a lesson for anyone with drum brakes on there machines, check and service regularly as to much wear can be very expensive....

Your thread inspired me to get stuck into the RZR which I have done so thanks. Plus, I had an NS125F in the Rothmans colours with a 190cc big bore, blew it up at 90mph going into top gear. Turned out the head gasket was the cover of auto trader

Day7

As i stated earlier the cosmetics of the bike at this time are not important, although saying that the fuel tank looks a mess

so today i took a can of matt black i had kicking about and gave it a quick spray to see how it comes out

now if it takes ok i will leave it as is but if not i will strip it back and start again with bare metal.

while i wait for the wheel to arrive i also have bought some fiberglass as the right hand side panel is split in 2, i will look at these (the tank and the panel) tomorrow

It wasn't a bad bike to be fair, but in the three months of ownership, it started rattling top end like a bitch.
