Hi i need to remove my cam chain tensioner to replace the o ring that sits between the cam chain tensioner and the engine. There are 3 bolts, 1 big bolt in the middle and 2 smaller bolts. I think the middle bolt has something to do with the tension of the chain and the other 2 hold the tensioner onto the engine. When refitting the cam chain tensioner do i need to reset the tensioner ?

Thanks

I have a similar tensioner on my R1.When I have to change the valve clearance shims part of the procedure is to remove the tensioner so as to get the cams out so as to change the shims.

On reassembly, the plunger is pushed back into the body of the tensioner and locked into place. The tensioner body is then bolted back onto the back of the engine block and the plunger is released by way of a blade screwdriver. With all of the camchain slack being tensioned by the moving tensioner blade, this takes up any slack automatically.

But in your case I would ensure that when you release the plunger, turn the engine over by hand/spanner a few times before starting the engine so that any slack in the camchain is removed.Failure to do this could allow the camchain to jump a tooth and throw out the cam timing/bend a valve or two.

The plunger is whats moves inwards to put pressure against the cam chain tensioning bar.

The central bolt is only a blanking bolt.Beneath this bolt is a mechanism that allows the plunger to be locked into the retracted position for reinstalling onto the engine.

When you remove the tensioner from the engine, the plunger will extend to its fullest extended position. This will have to be retracted for reinstallation.

i think you need to get a manual dude!!

as explained the tensioner auto tensions the chain and will "extend fully" ( as if the chain goes slack ) and lock on a rachet affair ( several types out there, some rachets some inclines and some double inclines sprung loaded etc etc etc ) when removed making it impossible to refit unless "unloaded".

when tensioner "unloaded and lock" the unit is ready for refit, and is "released" ( to take up tension ) when fitted and tightened.

be sure to follow instructions by turning eng over by hand ( in the direction of eng rotation, ie not BACKWARDS ) initially or bent valves etc may happen.

get a manual for xmas, you know it makes sense.
