Depends on the bike, usually the point of using cheap oil is to change it more often. That said most bikes are recommended to be changed at 4k, so it rather depends on your machine.

How cheap is cheap?

depends, what do you mean by cheap oil? ON a honda CBR (in your sig i guess) that should be fine for road use.

Manual on my Zx6r says some thing like 6-7k intervals.

Depends on the bike. It's safe to say that alot of medium performance bikes (commuters etc) recommend 5-6k, however there are some oddities, like the cx500 which recommend 8k..

Look in the manual

Oil and filter is specified at every 8000 miles on my CBR, same as it was on my old CBR. (I don't do anywhere near that milage in a year these days, so I'll be doing it every 12 months instead).

What bikes specify 4k in the owners manual? Shocked Neutral

The older bikes will be fine, back when engines were built to withstand a lot of shit.

A lot of older bikes had far more frequent oil changes. Eg, CB400N was 1800 miles between oil changes.

All the best

What gave you that impression?

My bike needs an oil change every 2k (or 3k, depending on which manual you read Laughing). It's the same for old cars - 3000 miles used to be a pretty typical oil change interval for pre-80s vehicles. The trade-off is that old cars/bikes don't need (or at least, weren't designed to use) the sophisticated oils that modern engines require. Therefore the oil tends to be cheaper.

Modern engines are hardly fragile. Think how many people thrash the hell out of their bikes and how few ever blow up. The engineering in a modern engine is a lot more advanced and precise. (With a few exceptions, like the YZF-R125. Quite a few reports of blown up engines a little too often!)

My SH300's oil change light comes on every 4k. Many, if not most, scooters spec fairly low intervals for oil changes. At least the SH300 has an actual oil filter, rather than a screen etc.

The oil cooled Bandits were (from memory) ~3800 miles for oil changes (ie, 6000km).

All the best

I recently bought a Honda NC700S, which specifies a service interval of 8K miles, and I questioned this as well. The dealer said modern engines, especially ones that run at such low revs as this model's, can easily go 8K between oil changes. You're more likely to need a new tire or brake pads in that period, though, which is why they also recommend a quick checkup at 4K.

Whatever the handbook/owners manual says is correct. The manufacturer knows much better than anyone on here.

My CBR600 did.

Unless I am mistaken about the model CBR you had (I thought it was a carb'd, ally framed 600f) then I'm pretty sure that is incorrect.

My 2001 CBR says 8k, Nox's CBR was the same model as you had, and he says 8k.

EDIT: Looking at the F4 service manual also specifies 8k.

What oil are you using? I would say 2000 or more is fine.

I never had an official manual for it, but I had a Haynes and I'm sure that said 4, as did the intervals in the service book. I did sell it over 4 years ago mind.

Generally changed the oil more often than that, since I did a lot of trackdays. It would start giving false neutrals when it wanted a change.

Totally depends on the age of the bike and the usage - how many heat cycles does the oil go through?
If it takes 3 years to cover 5000 miles (achieved by riding around town) then it's definitely no good.
My NC has done 5000 miles since its last service and the oil is still honey coloured - but I've done those miles within 2 and a half months.

Although doing the same mileage on my ER5 (in the same time frame) would've made the oil black by now and I would definitely be changing it sooner.

My Explorer has a 12000 mile service interval including oil changes. Fuck that. Sorry Triumph, my lady will be getting new drinkies at 5000 miles at the most.

change mine (zzr600) every 10k miles. That works out about once every 6 months.
