So just after getting a few games and 2 new controllers for my ps3, its decided to start playing up, games are crashing, then not reading discs at all, but after a restart it starts reading again for a while, but then crashes after maybe half an hour.

has anyone else has this problem? after some research I'm hoping it is just a dirty laser, but what is the best way to go about cleaning it? i know cd lens cleaners will probably damage the laser but do the specific blu ray cleaners work? this for example. Or do I need to change the laser unit, looked into it and looks fairly straight forward.

cheers in advance

TBH it doesn't sound like a dirty laser as it WOULDN'T load full stop.

With the crashing it sounds like it could be over heating.

Did you buy it new?
Do you hear the fan spin up before putting a disc in?
Have you checked the warranty seal on the bottom of the console to make sure it hasn't been tampered with?
Are the discs clean?
Are all the air vents clear of dust.

I recently stripped my console down just for the hell of it, while it was in bits I decided to clean all the dust out of it (bought second hand), they are very simple to take apart and rebuild though

hmmm i see your point, but the system still works, just not reading the disc intermittently, which doesn't point to overheating. saying that im not an expert

its the original 60 gig from new 5 and a half years ago, never had any problems whatsoever, the fan always has been fairly loud and and constant

will have a check of the vents and maybe open it for a good clean before changing the laser. i would just buy a new 12 gig superslim and put my 320 gig hdd in if it wasn't for the hassle of copying and restoring all my data, did a hd change 2 years ago and took hours to clear a hd, format it properly then actually copy it all!

cheers for the input

Not sure how PS3s work not owning one, but do you have any games solely on the hard drive that you can play? This will help rule out the blue ray drive as the source of the issue if it still freezes when just gaming off the hdd.

If it works fine then it would point to your blue ray drive, in which case a replacement will solve the issue, you'll just have to swap the pcb from your drive over to the replacement. Give me a shout if you need a replacement as I got a couple of Blue-ray drives sat here collecting dust.

I've pretty much confirmed its the laser, played a PS3 game till it crashed, restarted the console and wouldn't read any blu ray disc. So I put in a PS1 cd and it played fine for over an hour until i got a headache and switched it off.

So its wont read blu ray discs but will play cd's, and im assuming normal dvd's fine, points to the laser as far as I know, doubt its dirty but still gonni open it up and clean it before buying a new one, luckily a new laser and mech is only about 22 quid and doesn't take long to replace.

Ghostrider what parts have you got and what condition are they in? this is the exact bit i need: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-FAT-PS3-LASER-DECK-KES-400A-KES-400AAA-KEM-400A-60GB-SOME-40GB-MODELS-/280895861319?pt=UK_VG_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item4166b2b247

I had this problem with my old 60gig.
I stripped and cleaned everything but no joy.
In the end it turned out to be a software problem so I formatted it and re-installed the OS last year and it been fine ever since. Thumbs Up

As far as I remember, there was a laser for cd/dvd discs and another laser for blu ray Question

yip 2 separate diodes, 1 for cd/dvd and 1 for blu ray. the 2 lasers are different colours, cd/dvd is red, and blu ray is violet. you can change the individual diodes i do believe, but its rather tricky and you need specialist tools, defo not worth it when the whole laser mechanism is only 23 quid.

I have ordered it and will get it in a few days, will report back if it works or not Thumbs Up

Received the part today, unfortunately the ebay idiot sent the wrong part, I ordered the laser and motor mechanism like I linked earlier, but he sent me the laser only. Anyway went ahead and fitted the laser to the existing tray, and presto works perfectly!

Well chuffed, what I will say is I had some trouble getting the drive to accept discs. When you put the drive back together you have to make sure the arms and springs that make up the eject system are in the correct position. There is one arm that is free moving and this was what was causing the disc feed issues, but finally found a video that explained the spring system and off it went.

Gonni have a long session later on to make sure its working spiffingly, but all seams good, will also try ps2 and psx games but hoping no maladys. Thumbs Up

I had exactly the same problem with the Blu ray lens. Took about 30ins to swap out with a replacement from eBay.

Little update, new laser has packed in already after maybe 15 hours of use, playing black ops 2 at the end of an online game it crashed and now wont read blu rays at all!

Rather unimpressed unsurprisingly, will be emailing the seller and getting a refund, considering just getting a new one, less hastle
