Probably, depending on the traffic and how far from a service station.

I had to on the way back from Lincoln as I hit very heavy traffic queuing for the dartford tunnel and wanted to be able to see perfectly as it was getting dark at the time.
I had no idea how long it would be until the next service station and for safety's sake I had to pull over and switch it over to the clear one.
personally I only would if I really needed to. Had the traffic been okay i wouldn't've bothered unless it got a lot darker.

Oh, and aren't those M11 roadworks a pain in the arse when you're heading towards London - I was too busy filtering to notice the sign that said keep in the left lane for M25. I then found myself on the opposite carriageway unable to do anything about it - bugger! Ah well, at 24p/mile expenses it wasn't too bad. Laughing

Me, personally, if I felt it was getting a bit dangerous, then yes, I would have swapped it on the hard shoulder i.e. hoofing the bike to the very inside of the shoulder and walking up the hill to get away from it. Then swap your visor,a s I hope everyone does that, visor problem or not.

If a traffic bod asked what the hell are you doing, this isnt a lay by, I'd just reply with, what do you want, POSSIBLE inconvineince for less than 2 minutes or the possibility of a dead biker on your hands, and all of that traffic*pointing to the heavy traffic*

I'd imagine that'd work.

Or you could just ride with your visor up?

Riding with the visor up on the motorway isn't too comfortable, and when filtering do you really want to risk having something in your eye?
As the traffic was pretty much stationary I pulled into the far left and stayed on the bike. The other side of the barrier was a steep downhill verge.
Problem is...it's an illegal visor in the first place so I don't know what the copper would say about that!

Simple answer is to not use an illegal visor in the first place Sad

Even if only using a slightly tinted one you should change it before setting off on your journey if it is going to get dark.

Personally I would have used the hard shoulder anyway, I'd rather have a ticking off from Police rather than put myself at risk.

My journey was 3.5 hours long and I had a headache already so there's no way I wasn't going to use the dark visor to start with.
I set out at 1.30ish so there was plenty of light then.

Hi

Yes the motorway hard shoulder is the most dangerous part of the motorway, but that is hardly saying much (most dangerous part of the safest roads in the UK).

As such I would have no problem stopping there to change a visor, although I suspect that some police might not agree.

All the best

Keith

speaking of using the hard shoulder, sometimes when im on the motorway my petrol runs out and i have to go on reserves, but with the tap i have at the moment its really stiff, so the last couple of times ive ran out ive had to pull over to be able to use both hands to turn the tap, would i get a grilling for this like the visor thing or..?

The hard shoulder is for emergency use only. Running out of petrol is an emergency, and it is difficult for you to proceed. Therefore I would say it is perfectly reasonable to stop and switch to reserve. Thumbs Up

Wearing an illegal visor and stopping when you see fit to change it is not an emergency, I would think would be the argument from a traffic officer. Thumbs Down

Wear a clear one and there is no issue, I was out riding in Essex yesterday for several hours between 08:00 and 17:30, and I used a clear visor all the time.

Wotcha.

"Engine cut out, but it seems ok now. Thanks for stopping"

Correct use of the hard shoulder - at the expense of a lie. Do you prefer a fine, or would you rather go to Hell ? Wink

It's a similar arguement to pulling over onto the hard shoulder to put your waterproofs on, or even sheltering under a bridge in a downpour... which is more dangerous - continuing and being distracted by being wet and cold, continuing in terrible conditions or parking up for a few mins?

Wotcha.

A couple of us were in that situation - and we did indeed argue the point with the very nice policeman who had stopped to give us a bollocking about stopping on the hard shoulder underneath a conveniently placed bridge. He wouldn't have it that continuing in such heavy rain would constitute a dangerous situation - in the end we kept him talking until the rain had mostly cleared.
Once again - it's the lesser of two evils. Do you risk a court appearance and a fine - or you do risk getting a car up the backside because you can only travel safely at 20 mph on the motorway ?
As I said before - lie through your teeth, and tell 'em the bike has some kind of intermittent engine problem . . . seems ok now officer.
I must admit, it's only been once in 30 odd years that a policeman has ever questioned why I was stopped on the side of a motorway.

Yeah, I think I'd stop. Law is a load of bollocks on visors anyway. For some reason its okay for the local chav to have blacked out windows on his chav mobile but it isn't for a bloke on a bike Rolling Eyes

If I could though I'd try and make it to the next service place or road off the motorway as you don't know what moron might use the hard shoulder for overtaking.

Fair enough - but they tint the front side windows, which is illegal. Only the rear side and rear windows are allowed to be tinted.

A biker uses a dark visor for safety purposes - what the fuck does a Nova need it's windows tinted for? To hide stolen goods? Laughing

But saying that i'd (try to) prepare myself so i never got into that situation anyhow
