Excellent that, will be sending a link to a few of my clients who like to dabble in updating graphics for their blogs/website posts etc.

GIMP would be much better than that but some people don't like it.

I have gimp and Paint.net and I find myself using Paint.net much more, its so much easier.

I have been a user of Photoshop since 1999 as far as I can remember. I strayed away from it at the beginning of 2000's with Painshop Pro but that was a mistake in the long run. I only went back to PS at CS3.

I had tried GIMP in the past too but didn't like it. Recently had to get a client setup using GIMP and it has come a long, long way since I used to use it. It's very similar to PS in a lot of ways, just highly annoying all my keyboard shortcuts I know off the top of my head for PS do different things in GIMP Laughing

Well the thing loaded ok and seems to work fine. I just need to figure out how to use it now.

It seems a lot more capable than Paint.net. But time will tell if I can get the hang of it.

Haha, of course it is. Ask me if you need.

So the old version of PS is still better than modern version of paint.net and gimp? I mostly get away with just standard paint (resizing & cropping), but some times need more advanced features.

Would you rather have an 80's ferrari or a 2012 VW Golf?

(don't take this literally, it's just a metaphor).

I've been using 'Shop since CS4, currently running CS6 suite.

Will be interesting to see the difference.

A legit copy helps with clients who are wary on commissioning pirated software users.

Paint.NET would be infinitely more capable with a bare handful of extra features, mostly around how it selects pixels (including clone stamp pixels). Channel-based selection (i.e. being able to select fractional pixels, similarly to how Photoshop works when you edit the selection with quickmask) and tools for editing the selection (e.g. expand / contract, border, feather, many of which could be bodged together by being able to save and load the selection to a single-channel image and editing it with filters). Add in editable layer transparency (Photoshop layer masks) and we almost have a deal.

90% of tricky Photoshop retouching work, in my limited experience, is blending one thing with another. And that's mostly about making sure the borders aren't too obvious. The harsh pixel boundaries that you get from whole pixel selection make that way harder.

Oh, and a better editor for affine transformations. Something like Photoshop's Free Transform.

^ I find with Paint.net I could play with stuff as a learning experience. I've got a shedload of editing plugins for the program and just playing around with different effects was simple enough.

I loaded up the paintshop program yesterday thinking the same thing. I've seen people on here change the colour of bikes and making it look realistic. I thought "ahh lets make that Panegale turn black" and could I do it? Read the tutorial and still flummoxed, looked online at a couple of sites and managed to get some of the bike black but not all of it. Yellow I could manage, even purple and green but black was eluding me.

Theres just so many options. And this is pretty basic compared to the newer versions. Shocked

I use Photoshop CS6 / Illustrator CS6 / Dreamweaver CS6 daily. Those are the 3 essential tools to me to design and code websites.

Illustrator for logos and vectors and the rest Photoshop. There's some very cool stuff in PSCS6, like content aware fill, titlt shift filters, HDR toning and the rest.

It does take years to get used to of using it daily, certainly not something you can just learn to be awesome in within a few weeks.
