Hi

Ive got my old laptop hard drive in a case and have connected to the PC with USB. it detects it as a mass USB storage device but it wont detect it under 'my computer' and i cant seem to do anything with it.

i just wanna wipe it clean (format it) so its there for storage as itll still have windows etc on it. any suggestions??

thanks

go into the control panel -> Admin tools -> Computer management -> Disk management

remove the partition(s) on said drive (make sure its the right one or you will loose data or worse)
create a new partition and format

have you got a floppy drive, if not get one, download f-disk, unplug all other drives boot from from floppy and run it

this will will set all sectors to 0 (normally called a low level format) removing all trace of anything that was on there, make sure there is nothing on there you want to save as it will be unsave-able by normal means.

most likely restrictions on your works PC is stopping you from being able to format it

as to Ubuntu you could do the other way around Ubuntu on the primary storage on the secondary

floppy drive is a no, only have notebook

on the laptop i had windows with ubuntu running along side. now the laptop is dead i can use my playbook for browsing etc but i like ubuntu for torrent sharing. i dont wanna mess about with the wifes notebook and the kids notebook is only a standard cheapy with low memory so dont wanna mess with that.

however, with my spare harddrive i would like to wipe it and install ubuntu to it so when the kids go to bed i can plug it in to theirs and let it download torrents whilst not interferring with the wifes usage etc.

but im guessing that would mean id have to tell which harddrive ubuntu installs to and have to plug it into the notebook before powering on so can choose between windows/ubuntu as i did before on the laptop.

make sense?

more effort is required then, the drive is most likely fine, its just you cant do much due to restriction on you work computer.
