Intermediate upgrade

Current setup:

Core 2 Quad 2.33 GHz
9800GTX+
3Gb DDR2 667 ( really 2 Gb DDR2-800 and 1 Gb DDR2-667)

I wanted to get more ram, but was appalled at the prices of DDR2-800. Plus more money spend of DDR2 is just spending more money on an obsolete technology.

£20 for 2Gb of 800, or £30 for 8 Gb of 1600

So current plan is get a cheap 775 DDR3 motherboard and stock it with 8Gb DDR-1600. When I go for a proper upgrade I'd be buying the ram anyway, so at least its spending cash on current technology. I've got a few Core 2 Duo's lying about that I had before the quad. So I can put them in the old board to give away/sell for a tenner or something.

Sound remotely sensible?

Not many 775 boards support ddr3 and none that i know support 1600 speeds as most of the chipsets are being overclocked even to hit the ddr3 1333 spec, that said 1600 is recommended for i series cpu's so you could always go 16gb in the futurewith a second pair.

I have a asrock g41m-s3 board with e8400 and 8gb corsair vengeance cl9 1600 ram, these are 1.5v at 1600 but the board was supplying 1.65 on auto for some reason, they are running @ 1333 with the timings tightened up at 1.53v now, states in the mobo manual that ddr3 1333 is supported in o.c. mode so I have not been tempted to push for any more on this one.

Over all the asrock board is o.k. but as with most asrock boards fan control in the bios is less than impressive with only two headers 1pwm 1 3pin (only pwn controlable) they scale fan voltage from one to ten, slow speed in bios has a value of 7 (roughly 8.5v), so unless you adopt low rpm fans you must wait untill your operating system boots to use the asrock o.c. utility to lower the fan speeds.

In the end I just manned the fuck up and got a whole new mobo ram and cpu.

Now running:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition C3 3.40GHz
8Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 MHz
GIGABYTE GA-970A mobo
9800 GTX+

Much faster than what I had and didn't cost too much, the board should be good to go (apparently) for the new line of AMD Piledriver CPUs should I want to upgrade later. Even better, my whole old system I put in an mates old case to sell to him.
