Say you've been pulled for speeding and plod asks, "Do you know why we've stopped you?" What's the best answer for this without staying silent, saying I don't know, or sounding cocky?

You do not admit to anything. Something like "Sorry officer I'm afraid I do not know why you stopped me". The onus is on them to prove wrongdoing.

That being said, there is no need to be a dick as that will just aggravate the situation, especially if they have you bang to rights.

I try to get my helmet off and be off the bike before they're out of the car. Then I go for a polite "y'alright?".

I've never been asked "do you know why we've stopped you" they usually tell me...

I've been pulled in the car twice, both times I've been asked, both times I genuinely didn't know. One was I was swerving apparently. Nothing to do with 2 young lads driving around at 2.30am Rolling Eyes and the other for a headlight that wasn't working.

On the bike I've never been pulled, but chances are it will be for excess speed.

The correct answer is,

"I don't know, it depends on how long you've been following me."

Apparently the reply to
"Do you know why I've stopped you?"
Is NOT
"No, why. Do you not?"

Probably "I'm not sure officer."

And if you were blates speeding, and they ask why.

"Oh I'm sorry, I was concentrating on the road not on my speedo so I couldn't say how fast i was going"

Works for me. Thumbs Up

"Technically, you haven't stopped me as we're both still travelling at something between 500-800 mph as the Earth rotates, whilst the Earth itself is orbiting the Sun at roughly 18.5 miles per second even as the solar system orbits the Milky Way at about 155 miles per second, so all you've actually done is slow me down a bit. All of which should answer what I suspect will be your next question."

The serious answer that starts off on the good foot.

No officer, was something wrong with my driving or my bike / car.

To which they may reply "Perhaps we have stopped. Due to the nature of space and it having no fixed points or boundaries it is impossible to state what is moving. Just because the earth is not the centre of the universe does not mean that everything else is not simply revolving around the earth. This is a pretty important principle in Einstein's general theory of relativity. So, punk, do you know why I stopped you relative to the earth or do you fancy being gang raped in a cell tonight?"

+1. Rather than being an arse about it, why not just be honest?

The worse that happens is you get the same ticket as before, the best that can happen is you get a slapped wrist and let on your way.

I've been pulled over for speeding twice, 110 in a 70, and 81 in a 50. Both times when they said 'why have I stopped you?', I've been honest 'I was doing silly speeds, moments of madness.' etc. Got a slapped wrist both times.

I'm sure if I played up, and said I have no idea, they would have dealt with me differently.

I know there isn't officially such a thing as an attitude test, but reality is, there is.

I'm sure everyone is the same in their jobs, if someone is nice, they'll be helpful/nice back, if someone is an arse, chances are you'll be an arse too.
