"In the seventh episode, Christian Von Koenigsegg and Urban Carlson demonstrate their Free Valve technology that does not require a camshaft to run. This engineering is being pioneered by Koenigsegg for future use, but is already running in a Saab 9-5 test mule"

Very cool stuff. I wonder how long that will be before it filters its way into the average car? The change in fuel consumption is massive!

True variable valve timing.

Brilliant idea.

I remember seeing a similar video about a system Lotus were developing. They said that it removed the need for a throttle butterfly, as you can just set the valves to open with less lift and shorter duration at low load, and open with higher lift and longer duration with a high load.

Properly clever stuff, I hope to see it in affordable cars and bikes within my lifetime, hopefully before the dinosaur juice runs out. Very Happy

Wow, that would be cutting edge stuff if it hadn't been invented by Rover and CamCon 8 years ago;

Interesting, although I can't see on that site if they got it to a testing stage? Even if the idea isn't a new one, it's fantastic seeing it being developed further by Koenigsegg.

Is that technology cursed by gypsies? It seems to kill every company that it touches.

Like BMW's Valvetronic system, launched in 2001? Mr. Green

I bet someone in the West Midlands designed and built it in his garden shed in the 1920's.

Probably the most realistic "future of the internal combustion engine" video I have seen.

That flat opening curve is a game changer for performance engines.

Didn't know about that, but I'm going to argue that they did it using teh ghey. Laughing

The throttle butterfly is no longer needed as a means of controlling the air supply - though for safety reasons it is still fitted as an emergency back-up.

What's that you say, good idle and great low down torque, and a rediculous top end? WINNER! Very Happy

Yeah I quite like the idea of my valve actuation being mechanically linked with steel chain or at least a belt.

I guess it would be okay with a non-interference head, so that even if the controller or air supply fucks up it won't lunch the valves. Does now the car totally depends on it's own air compressor to function, I'm guessing there is also a small reservoir of air used to actuate the valves for starting the engine.

I can see the awesome benefits from a performance point of view, not sure I'd want a car/bike that actually ran like it though. That said, my ideal sort of car engine is a mechanical fuel pump diesel.

But why use air? hydrualics have been done before. I imagine it would be much smaller.

Weight I imagine. Hydraulics are heavy.
