Hi guys,

I've been lurking the forums for the last year or so, I did make an account but can't remember the user or pass so I made a new one Smile

I've had my licence for around a year and ride a ZX6R more or less on a daily basis everywhere I go. I'm getting a bit tired of cleaning it everytime the weather gets bad (been especially bad with the salt this year) so I've decided to get a new bike after the summer.

I know that this can be easily solved by just not cleaning it all the time but I love the way it looks when it's clean!

I'm considering the Ninja 250/300 for economic reasons (their MPG is great).

And also considering the ER6-F as it's a 'big bike' and the economy is decent (circa 50 mpg or so I hear).

What are your thoughts on this? I do plan on buying the bike brand new and I intend on keeping it for many years as a bad weather/winter/runaround bike.

Thanks guys

PS. I realise that there are alternatives however it has to be Kawasaki!

I'd go for the ER6F personally, I imagine the Ninja 250 would start to feel very slow before long.

Seems a false economy to buy a new bike as a winter hack!

Obviously you like your kawasakis, so if it was me I would be picking up a ZR750, like this one, very low miles, bog standard, good condition and barely over the £1.5k marker. For comparison an er6f with twice the miles will set you back £1000 more.

Still out of the listed bikes I would definitely go for the er6.

Serious?

Take it to a hand wash once a week and pay some pikey in a wool hat to swab it down for you.

Serious. That will cost you far, far less than the depreciation on a new bike, while achieving your stated goal, and allowing you to keep riding the bike that you really want to be on.

If you want a different answer, I'd suggest re-phrasing your question.

Many thanks for all the replies guys. I'm a fairly new biker and it's great to get opinions from those who are much more experienced than myself. The reason why I'm after something with better MPG even though I'm willing to dish out for brand new, is because I don't want to be fuelling up every 100-130 miles. If I can get near 200 out of a tank that'd be great. Miss the days of £12 full tank on a 125 and getting 250-300 miles out of it Shocked

I'm guessing due to salt + corrosion under the fairings? It's something I didn't think would be such a big problem, thanks for bringing this to light. Would a good application of ACF-50 all over (inc under the fairings) help in this regard? I'm guessing it has to be applied twice a year? Any other preventative measures?

I'm unfortunately too busy to devote the time necessary to keeping the bike cleaned/maintained all the time (even though I do spend quite some time on it), I suppose it annoys me when I can't clean it and I have to ride it dirty.

It's a good idea though, I guess I was put off by the fact that they use the pressure washers which I didn't want near the bike. Do the chemicals they use affect the ACF-50 layer already on the bike, does anyone know?

Indeed, this is absolutely true. The reason I'm put off used bikes is because I'm new to biking and know just about nothing about repairs and maintainence (apart from the basics, chain, brakes etc). Other than that, I'm ok with the depreciation. I plan to keep the bike for at least 5 years.

I think I've given the wrong impression for the use of the new bike, I plan on using the new bike (250/300/ER6) as my main bike even during summer, and the ZX6 for the occasional weekend ride during good weather.

Up until now I've been using the ZX6 for everything. Go to work, ZX6. Go to shops, ZX6. Go to next door neighbor's house, ZX6.

I love the looks of the ZX6 but using it for everyday use is boring. I'd rather something more economical for everyday use. I plan to rack up 6-8k miles a year on the new bike.

I'm having a bad day today, but this made it a little better, thanks for that Laughing Laughing Laughing

Town riding you wont get 200 miles to a tank from an ER6, closer to 150, on a run this go's up to about 180-190 depending on how heavy your hand is. Its a good bike though, very flickable, comfy and the fairing provides decent protection.

You'll get 180-200 out of a divvy900, probably not what you are after though Laughing

Honestly as I mentioned before I think a ZR750 would do the job quite nicely, I nearly bought one a few years back and almost regret not having done so.

Dafuq you chatting about!?

I've ridden my fireblade in the last 5 winters NO problems! All you need to do is ensure that everything is liberally coated in ACF50. Apply onto a microfibre cloth and then coat your bike, forks and generally anything that doesn't require friction to function, or control surfaces! Basically the road and salt spray will bond onto the ACF50. I'm not sure if it has any passivating properties, but it does inhibit corrosion.

Mild steel is mild steel and will rust irrespective! I'm fortunate that the 929 Blade onwards came with titanium headers, so corrosion isn't an issue for me.

Invest in some crash mushrooms and ride to the conditions!

And I found my ZX6R especially frugal! 45-50mpg on motorways and no worse that 35mpg when hooning it.

You need to weigh in the cost of taxing, insuring and maintaining two bikes. Pretty much the reason why I decided to hardcore the Blade every winter, because it just didn't make sense to be on a hack which might have a higher risk of breaking down!

Thanks again for the replies guys, much appreciated. Seems it's between the ER6 and the 300.

A question, if I may, about the ER6 for those who own it, I had a 2011 ER6N for a day or so when my ZX6 was in for a service, I noticed the same thing on the ER5 (I rode one for a minute before my mod 2). The bike seems very slow when pulling off from stationary, as in, it take time to get from 0 mph to around 10 mph. Is it a matter of you have to give it some for it to go, or is this normal? Do you have to find the 'sweet spot' to get a normal take off?

Also, are they fairly reliable, I'll be looking at the 2012 model rather than the 2013 one as I think the 2012 looks better.

Thanks for this, I'm in the same position with the ZX6, and find myself asking the very same questions, do I just ride it all the time or take the financial hit and get something else for day to day riding, and keep the ZX6 for the good days.

I'm getting on average 35 mpg out of the 2011 ZX6R on V-Power/Momentum (110-130 miles per tank) and I do like to give it some. Surprisingly I get around 80-90 miles per tank on normal fuel, while riding conservatively.
