 |
|
I've got a 99 zx-6r (G2) and am having problems getting it started.
The starter seems to be working fine but it won't turn over. This is worse in the morning when it's cold but this evening even when warm it wasn't working. The red oil light comes on when I turn on the bike and usually goes away when i try to start it but it wasn't this evening. Eventually i got it started by turning off the lights, turning off the ignition and then quickly turning it on and trying to start it. Is this possibly just a low battery or could it be something more?
Plus, when i try to start it in the morning, when i get it started, it generally ticks over fine for a bit and then dies, even with the choke fully on. Is there anyway to sort this? Only way i've got around it is to carry on manually revving the engine for a bit but as i live in a built up area its not ideal. Any suggestions?
Went to fill it up today and though I've done over 100 miles to my current tank, it's not taking a full 18 litres. This may be because I'm not reving it lots but when i fill it right up there isn't any fuel coming out of the breather, could it be blocked? Are the problems I'm having with the ignition be because no/little air is getting to the carbs?
Please help

My ZX6R G2 is quite tricky to start but I've got the knack now, When starting from cold just put it on full choke, Start with some throttle, Then mine revs upto about 2.5k RPM, It'll stay there for awhile (About just enough time to get my helmet and gloves on) and then the revs will die when that happens just raise the revs slightly (to about 2k) then turn the choke off completely, Keeping the revs at about 2k for about 10seconds, Rev it slightly upto about 3-4k then close the throttle and it'll idle just fine.
Are you riding until it hits the reserve then filling up? Mine does anywhere between 130-170miles before it hits reserve then I generally get about £13's worth of standard unleaded fuel in there. ____________________ My bikes are at https://www.bikepics.com/members/dynamight/ |

In East Anglia, so shouldn't be too cold. Think, judging by what DynaMight wrote, that it's just a thing with G2s (can't comment on other Ninjas)

Trying to at least. With the problems I was having with it I thought "it could be lack of fuel" so topped it up. Only had it a few days and not run out yet.
Battery is charging atm, which I'm pleased to say is a hell of a lot easier to remove then the one on the old bike. Glad the alarm doesn't ring at me. When i reinstall it, i'm hoping the problems go away, never know. Plus, I'll attach the other cables which came with the Accumate so I don't need to remove it from now on (though if it's raining, i probably would do anyway - 240v electrics and rain. Not the best mix)

I dont think you have as many problems as you think.
Put the bike in the dry, and leave it for a day. Then try it. Make sure the battery is fully charged, and the terminals are connected properly and securely.
Then we'll take it from there.
When you say "starter is not clicking" do you mean the clicking sound or the actualy spinning of the starter motor.
Relax, you will sort it out Eventually . |

Remeber different bikes like to be started different ways. The starting thing might not be a problem, just the way the bike works. The weather means its even harder to "find out" the way to start a bike. And having a new bike at the same time doens't help.
Bloody sports bikes are nothing but trouble. |
