I've decided I'd like some overalls for working on the bike/car. I don't know where to start.

What is the difference between overalls and mechanics overalls?

Sizing seems straight forward, so not to worried on that front, wife is handy with a needle if they are to long.

Worth paying for a brand, I.e. Dickies, over ebay cheap ones?

Anything else worth knowing?

Overalls are overalls! The only real difference I have seen is how they are closed (popper or velcro) and number of pockets.

That's what I had hoped.

Looking for long and short sleeve, fingers crossed the local discount diy place will stock em.

Black overalls, fleece jacket and a woolly hat and you too can ride a #1 Superbike like me.

You need access to your balls and a top pocket with a zip.

What size are you?

I might be able to wrangle you some for the cost of postage if you're a larger gent. We have loads of the bigger sizes at work for some reason.

They will be 'branded' with my companies name though.

If you are under 180cm tall and chest size under 100 I've got a brand new set you can have.

Nope on both accounts.

I'm happy to buy some, not expensive.

Ok Smile

I would say that Mechanics overalls are likely to be thicker, probably made from Pyrovatex/Nomex or similar (fire retardant).

Overalls could be thin cotton for painting, plumbing and so on.

Definitely consider the thickness of the material. Too thick and you'll have to strip off underneath when it's hot, too thin and you'll need more layers (and risk oil soaking through to clothes) when it isn't.

Best overalls I've ever had, mine are a year old now, washed often with a lot of abuse and no signs of wear. Just don't put your iPhone in the phone pocket and bend over Laughing

Get them bigger than your size. When you are bending over you need a fair bit of slack else things become uncomfortable in the gentleman's region. You might also want a few jumpers underneath in the winter. I've always gone for boilersuits myself.

It used to be that mechanics overalls had rubber buttons to avoid scratching bodywork.

I despise boiler suits.

I wear workshop trousers, black polo shirts, and hoodies (Again, black, and printed with company logo).

Just get yourself to Primani or any other clothing store, buy some black polo shirts and jumpers. Then get yourself a couple of pairs of combat trousers, like dickies etc.

So much more comfortable, and bearable in the summer.

I can't get on with overalls, they're always too big or too small and never feel comfortable to me. I've got a couple of the Warehouse/Lab type coats instead which I much prefer. Got a bike lift so don't have to scrabble on the ground and protect the legs so they are fine.

One thing worth looking for is overalls/work trousers with pockets for gel pads on the knees. If you're kneeling on tarmac or concrete for any length of time then they're a really good idea.

Gel knee pads are the mutt's nuts. Thumbs Up
