I just bought a used yamaha yzf750r and I don't much about bikes to be honest. I was wondering what is the best thing to do. Probably giving it the first time to a dealer or a good mechanic would be a good idea - as they know what is proper and what needs to be changed.

What does a full service consist of?
How much would that cost around by a dealer and by a mechanic?

Do you have any idea of the service history? It's worth asking the previous owner about this because most servicing jobs have a set interval, depending on the bike. If you've got no idea what has been done to the bike recently then I'd start with an oil and filter change (which is really easy to do yourself). Check the brake pads and spark plugs too. It's worth getting a Haynes manual and doing the simple stuff like this yourself, rather than paying a mechanic an extortionate fee.

Hi

Full service could include many things.

At a guess on a YZF:-
Change oil and filter (4000 miles I think)
Change spark plugs (every couple of oil changes)
Adjust valves (once in a blue moon, ~20000 miles on the 5 valve Yamaha engines)
Change fuel filter
Change air filter
Check / adjust / lube Steering head bearings.
Check / replace brake pads
Check / lube suspension linkages
Check bulbs
Replace brake / clutch fluid
General check and lube of moving items (brake lever pivots, cables, etc)
Adjust chain
Balance carbs
Change fork oil
Check battery

Could probably think of a few more things. Many of those items would not be required for a minor service, other might need doing differently (eg, clean the air filter rather than replace it).

Note that shimming the valves on a 5 valve Yamaha engine is a time consuming job as the cams have to be removed to change the shims. Fortunatly they do not need doing very often.

All the best

Keith

also there is an exup valve in the exhaust which may need lubricating and checking then there is the matter of the emission valves and other junk, also othe things like checking radiator hoses and flushing the radiator replacing brake fluid and clutch fluid and general checking of things like engine mounts and oil in the forks and the seals that keeps it in! but all in all a major service is probably about 300 to 350 pounds plus or minus a bit extra for the mechanics beer and smokes!
