Due to an irritating eye allergy i have no choice but to ride with glasses on until it clears up and i can go back to contacts.
I'm quite short sighted and when riding, i found that the vibrations/general road bumpiness shook the glasses around a bit making my vision wobbley, which felt quite dangerous at times.
Is there a way around this? My glasses do have quite thick arms on them, would thinner arms help? The helmet itself is shaking the arms up and down i think which is really irritating.
Thanks

Might just be my high prescription to be honest, shaking them slightly on my face has the same affect. Will just have to make do

I wear glasses. Its the bits of the arms that go past your ears and stick out behind your ears that are the problem. The helmet can press down on them and raise the glasses off your nose.

You can either get another lid such as HJC or Arai which doesnt have this problem, or you can cut into the polystryrene of your lid to remove the problem. Or you can chop off the end bits of your glasses.

The Arai even has channels for the arms so they arent pressed against your head.

Thread title of the year so far Laughing

How about - new invention - a prescription visor which replaces the need for wearing glasses while on a bike?

I should have ran a search, its been asked many times before to be honest.
I'll have a pop at modding an old helmet, i should be back to contacts within 2 months anyway at least.

Also been an issue for me this last few weeks. Got a new pair of glasses with thick arms, feckers constantly feel like they are gonna snap. My last pair had thinner, slightly more flexible arms and have not had an issue with them in 4-5 years. Its just the new pair >.<

I can't recommend laser eye surgery enough.

HJad mine done two years ago, main motivation being that I didn't like how i looked wearing glassed, and second to avoid the issues with my bike helmet.

Laser works out cheaper in the long run compared to contacts too.

I'm severly short sighted also.. and have this issue..Problem with shitty fitting helmet, helmet moves causing glasses to move.

I found with the new helmet as it fits a lot better my vision isn't going all retarded when going over bumps.

So I'm gonna go with Blame your helmet not your glasses.

I also wear glasses due to being short sighted.I have never had a problem with wearing glasses, even racing in enduros. But then the goggles that I wear are specifically designed for people who wear spectacles.

My road lid is an Arai and is quite close fitting.

Sounds good but given most eyes tend to have different prescription strengths (i.e -1.75 on one eye, -2.75 on the other) it'd be difficult to do this and I think the effect of a visor split 50/50 would be very hazy.

I wear glasses and they fuck me off so much, contact lenses make me faint so I can't use them Laughing

But mine just raise and sit slightly on my eyebrows. So annoying but once I get going they stay still and do the job fine, it's just one of those things.

I'd love laser surgery but far too scared to go down that route yet.. my eyes are constantly changing as it is Thumbs Up

I've got three sets of glasses, and the best ones are cheap ones with relatively large lenses and normal unflexible arms. They are a bit of a pain to get behind the ears, but once there they don't move and I can see perfectly well with them.

Been wearing glasses since before the beginning of time.

Had various pairs of glasses, never had a problem.
Had various Helmets, never had a problem.

Maybe it's down to prescription or something.

I agree. I got mine done three years ago.

When i first started riding, I tended to wear contact lenses most of the time, but they were a pain in the arse. I also took advantage of the fact that I had a flip front helmet which i could put on and take off without removing my glasses.

But glasses in a crash helmet were just a bloody nuisance - fogging being the worst. The helmet (particularly my lazy habit of putting it on and taking it off without removing my glasses) tended to cause damage to the arms and hinges of the spectacles as well.

Getting my eyes lasered eliminated these niggles. There are "cons" as well as "pros" though - I do notice that I get dry eyes more often than I used to - but these are outweighed by the (mostly convenience-related) benefits in my experience.

been wearing glasses since I was 12, so used to them now I can't see the point of laser surgery or contacts. I have a HJC helmet and no problems with wearing them.

I just cut the padding out of the lids cheek pads.

Trim a few mm off and stitch up.

You do know you're supposed to put the arms of the specs behind your ears from the top of them, not the bottom? Wink

The risk of my eyes being damaged from laser eye surgery really puts me off getting it done, my vision is crap and I hate glasses so I guess I'll have to put up with contact lenses. Crying or Very sad

Having spent a little time working for a company that manufactured prescription lenses, I can say it would be difficult, but not impossible.

The obvious way would be to adapt the design of the pinlock insert, so that you could use your lense on a variety of helmets, but there would be a number of problems to overcome and it would require collaboration with all the major helmet makers.

I suspect the low volume sales and R&D costs would make it prohibitively expensive for the end user.

I'm sure I read somewhere that it can't actually be done. Something to do with the angles and shear size of a visor.

I doubt you'd ever get near to the clear clarity of normal glasses and also what happens when you fog up / pay for petrol Laughing

Don't think it would work very well.

Billy Connolly was joking with his father about something similar. His father said he'd drove over to Billy's house but was struggling with the driving as he brought his reading glasses and not his distance glasses.
Billy joked, 'Why don't you get one of them new fangled 'prescription windscreens' Da?'

His father asked, 'Oh that sounds great. Where he could get one of them?'

Billy, keeping the joke going, said, 'Ocht there's a guy who works beside him in the shipyard who can get them cheap.'

His auld Da, not realising he was having his leg pulled, was all excited about it and asked Billy to try to get him one for his car.

Weeks later his dad asked him, 'Billy son, did you manage to speak to the guy about the presciption windscreens yet.?

Billy, told his da that, 'The guy hadn't been at work for a while as he was off sick.'
He didn't have the heart/balls to tell his dad it was a joke. Smile
