Hi folks,

Im just looking for some general maintenance/upkeep tasks for my bike, preferably things that are free or very cheap!

Ive checked chain tension and wiped various things with a thin coat of oil for protection/preservation.

Checking valve clearances I dont have the guts to do, yet...

Anything else?

I would like to redo the bikes wiring at some point as a lot of the stuff under the seat stinks of dodgy DIY repairs but ill leave that for a while yet.

Valve clearances are not what id call general maintanence, iv done it once and only because I had to fit new rockers.

Otherwise: -

Tyres - Pressure and tread.

Chain - Tension and lubrication

Oil - Should be somewhere between the L and H marks, preferably closer to the H.

Breaks - adjusted properly, pads/shoes have enough material left on them, and cables/hoses are ok.

Bearings - make sure there is no play in the wheel or steering bearings.

Lights - things flash and light up when they are supposed to.

and generally make sure everything is tight/fastened/clipped as its supposed to be and are not caked in muck, though this tends to cause less of a problem on modern bikes.

Also the things that Iv probably forgotten and someone else will mention later Laughing

P.S. Wiring tends to be ok if you have a couple of useful tools (multimeter, soldering iron etc) however bad bodges by someone else can cause a nightmare! trust me i tried.

de-cokeing/lubcating power valves (two strokes)

check front and rear brake pads have enough material

clean and oil, or repalce air filter (foam oil, paper replace)

check wheel bearings (wheels should be of the ground and there should be no sideways movment)

inspected exhaust system for holes/leaks (caused by rust, vibration etc)

I'd say change your oil twice as often as your manual says and filter the same, check your chain often, possibly invest in a laser allignment tool (they are getting quite reasonable, and if you planning on rideing a while a worthy investment)

Valve clearences, they are (apparently) not such a big deal, but make sure you have everything you need, i.e. torque wrench +settings e.t.c. if you dont know what something is then leave it alone and find out, otherwise let a dealer do it! odie is kindly helpin me out tomorrow doing clearences, carb balenceing and cam chain tension... i'd do them myself but am quite nervous about it too!
