What is the best motorcycle to learn wheelies on?
As a wee whipper snapper I had an mtx50 with a h100 engine in it and I could wheelie ok'ish albeit my feet dragging the floor.... I now have a gsxr600k3 and my wheelie antics are comical to say the least.... I can wang it up in second off the power and go a little way but I run out of revs or I touch down real soon but the trouble is I am going so bloody fast by this time it scares me....
I am looking to buy a bike to practice on for lower speed mingers, maybe 25 - 30 mph or slower, whatever really.
I need something that wont need a load of "rev it hard and drop the clutch".
What are my options?
Cheers |

1200 Bandit with out any questions. All the wheelie schools that I have ever seen use them. They wheelie really easily on the power in first and second (at least mine did ) ____________________ I spend all my money on bikes and beer, the rest I simply waste! |

Are they really that good? what makes them such a good ride? I can appreciate yamaha make good bikes and off roaders are cools as funk but is this cream of the crop for one wheel riding for the money?
I am getting all excited, I'm quite keen on an off roader!! I have a gs550e to sell to fund this so about 500 quid is my limit....well maybe a bit more |

Good is relative, fun would be a better description and they are pretty old now, if you had to rely on one it would break your heart and wallet.
They are a toy, pure and simple, designed to ride flat out and like a complete tw@ all the time. Grin factor 9. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

I am lead to believe that the trailie styling makes them pretty robust in a crash. The trouble is that most of them will have been thrashed to within an inch of their lives so the engines can be ropy (even by liquid cooled 250 2-stroke standards).
I haven't owned one myself, just wish i did. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

I used to manage reasonable wang it up and hold it thru first gear wheelies on my rf 600 as I wasnt too bothered about spilling it but the problem with the gixxer is it cost so much to fix, one small off and wave good buy to £500 this was partly my reasoning on getting a old stunt bike to play on.
I found this on ebay https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=9809&item=4507407470&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW it looks to be bidding strongly already but maybe ill get lucky....
Whats it worth?? Any ideas?? |

Sounds good, though probably worth checking it over.
My current plan, which involves having money I'll never have to spend is to get one of these:

Stick some road rubber and get it MOT'd, then play,
(more reasonably I should sort out the bike's I got ) |

Any 4 stroke enduro/supermoto should do the trick. Some of the bigger ones are going to be harder to wheely though.. depends, something hard to wheely but crashable, and lots of time spent learning means you will learn technique over power.. which is what you want to do.
My WR used to power wheely easily in 2nd, It's not running right at the minute so won't come up on the power anymore which is a GOOD thing, as I've learnt to clutch, technique over power works, clutch is so much better as you can easily get it higher much quicker and I find it's a lot smoother as well as slower.
Personally I think supermotos are easier to get it up, but harder to balance, that's just my opinion, others disagree, most agree, some don't blah blah. But enduros are easier to get it up and generally quite slower... I've started clutching my WR from about 3 mph, walking pace.
Mostly though, whatever bike you have you just need to practice. Actually going to a suitable quiet location and going up and down is far far better than riding around pulling the odd wheelie here and there. And getting pictures is handy.
Cover the rear brake too! Can save you in a flip and is useful to learn it straight away if/when you get really good and want to start slowing it down.
You may finding wheelying a single cylinder 4 stroke trailie of around 400cc size easier.. I don't wheely the R6, never used to be able to wheely it but then again I never practiced as much as I do with the WR.. as you say the fear of dropping it and scratching the fairings etc puts a block on you!

Remember that most offorad bikes are geared much lower, giving the impression of easier wheelies etc .
That bike is a 'db150'; somewhere between an x-sport and a full size mx bike. Doesn't make much power I doubt (ie a tad over 10 maybe) and I think it only has 4 gears, they go for a bit over a grand I believe.
Dry weight of 76kg though, so not actually much more than the x-sport. |
