Any Blackbird Owners anything like close to me? The thing makes a noise/sound like someone rattling screws in a tin can suppressed with thin oil. It stops if you put it in neutral it reduces in volume if you pull the clutch in . It doesn't get faster in time with acceleration.
Because it goes away in Neutral with the back wheel still spinning it isn't the chain. So I am thinking clutch or Gearbox ?

Anyway Hope someone can give me a clue before I end up throwing more money at it. I want to sell it but cant while its making this noise

sounds suspiciously like clutch basket rattle, most Hondas have it, although it should really go away when you pull the lever in.

Thanks. I have heard that said but it seems really loud and I wouldn't have thought riders happily put up with that much din

If my bird has been parked up for a week or so sometimes when i first start it the clutch basket makes an awful racket for a minute or two but once i have grabbed the clutch lever it shuts up and doesnt do it again.
Can you get a video of it??

not really practical, it would have to be on its centre stand and running through the gears and I dont have the means to get decent sound/ on video

Usually I find removing all plates, wiping, rotating and checking the metal plates round a notch or two re-soak then re-torque the spring bolts helps. Not sure if you've got the chamfered inner metal ring on those, the one closest to the casing, they can sometimes go weak.

Those spring bolts lose a touch of tightness after a while mind they're only 10ftlb I think from memory in the first place. It's a quick sort out and no cost so worth a try first before digging deeper.......

If the noise persists when riding also re-check the front sprocket for wear.

I know the chain has some tight links and do not know where or when it was last serviced so have ordered a chain and sprocket kit , Hope I can find the workshop manual that will show me how to rectify the clutch ... Anyone offering to help ?

I can help with the workshop manual, but that's about all I'm good for - https://goo.gl/HcPcW

Riding along you hear what appears to be a clutch rattle or even worse some drive bearing rattle, doesn't appear to rise pitch with speed?

Pull the clutch in and the noise goes, also in neutral idling there's no rattling noise?

Strangely you may find it's not the clutch at all but the chain and sprockets.

I know it sounds daft but I've had this when a chain was stretched beyond the service limit.

"They all do that mate", well most of them anyway Mr. Green
Causes no problems it's a case of living with it and you'll eventually relegate it to background noise. It isn't clutch wear, basket notching, sticking plates etc but you should only be hearing it at rest and it goes when you pull the clutch in. You never hear of any actual problem with the clutch, they last forever on a 'bird, I thought I'd got problems with mine in 2003 and replaced it, no one on the owners forums had ever heard of one being done before and it had been out for 7 years then. There was nothing loose or worn on mine turned out to be a slave cylinder problem.
