Ok need a tech bod here Laughing

The only thing holding me back from rebuilding my bike is piston circlips! I thought they would come with the new piston, but obviously not. I have been told never to reuse old circlips as sometimes they 'jump out', so isn't really worth the risk.

What I wanted to ask was, does anyobody know if piston circlips are all a standard size, or does it depend on the bike??? The reason I ask is that my Honda dealer won't have them in stock coz they have no NSR parts kept in stock at all despite the fact is specialises in Honda's. So if they're a standard size they probably keep them behind the counter, if not I will have to put up with a weeks wait Sad Just thought I'd ask to see if anyone knew to save me a trip up there.......

Cheers,

Because I am not sure if the pin that attaches the piston to the conrod is a standard size, obviously pistons can be bigger around the conrod but... oh i dunno... i'll wait for Keith or someone Very Happy

Cheer anyway Scotty Smile

It's really not worth re-using old circlips. If you decide to put them back in, they may come loose or even break into several pieces. Speek to B & J Bike Spares in Willenhall, West Midlands. They know their stuff and they stock these sort of items for Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, etc.

B & J Bike Spares - 01902 634654

I think they will do next day mail order aswell.

They're thick as pig shit G, so even if I got through they wouldn't know 100%. Getting through in the first place is a different ball game altogether...Confused

The parts shop in Reading is generally pretty good... they *do* know what they're talking about and seem to have a remarkable amount of stuff in stock (ie reeds and fork seals for my 91 NSR!)

Hi

Never reuse circlips, and they are not a standard size. I have had incorrectly supplied circlips jumps out and trash a barrel once, so I am bit wary of this.

Not only does the size of the gudgeon pin (wrist pin for any Americans reading Laughing ) vary between bikes (and so the overall size of the circlip), but the thickness of wire used for the circlip will vary, so using a stiffer circlip made out of thicker wire from another bike might mean that the circlip will not sit correctly in its slot in the piston. Same also for using original equipment Honda pistons or a cheaper non standard piston. Almost always a cheap aftermarket piston will come with the circlips, but probably not for an original Honda one.

Aprilia circlips are really stiff and strong and are absolute pigs to get into place. If the NSR ones are anything like as strong then be very careful (and I would be tempted to order a spare just in case one pings off somehwere). Put a piece of cloth over the hole in the crankcase so that if you drop the circlip it wont fall into the engine. Also if you know which side you are going to push the gudgeon pin in from it is easiest to put the circlip on the other side of the piston in place before you put the piston on the bike.

All the best

Keith

Cheers Keith I will go and order them from my local dealer tomorrow if I can get up there (this is the only time I don't diss my m8s for buying cars, coz they can give me lifts to places when my bikes fucked Very Happy)

Can't see them being expensive, but looks like my rebuild is postponed for another week or so. Life's a bitch, then one won't insure you on a blade at 17...Laughing

I found to get parts for my old honda was excellent. usually 24 hours.
48 hours max, couldnt be more happier with what they do.
Part from i probably pay it back in the parts...
