Not wishing to be a whiney little bitch but I am seriously peed of with the pain in my shoulders. I have had a MRI scan and there is wear to the neck but not outside of normal boundaries I have problems in both arms.... Right arm my little finger has gave up and now sticks out sideways, there was a lot of pain last year but it seems to have resolved in a spazzy finger with no pain.
Left arm, Constant pain in shoulder blade for almost two years spreads all the way to my fingers that can go numb. I sit on my left hand to try and kill the hurt, it works a bit.
My old Dr (who I loved but took the P out of me but understood my lifestyle and never told me not to ride) has retired, should I see a new Dr? They will tell me to rest, I do not rest is it worth the grief?

having just spent a week and a bit off work with a fucked up shoulder i sympathise... a tiny bit

but the only way it would heal and stop hurting was to rest up, i did try and work through it, and it just kept getting worse and flaring up each time

after it got to the point of i couldnt sleep for more than 2 hrs at a time, i gave up and took time of work ( which sucks as i dont get sick pay)

so sure... go to the new docs, but if your not going to rest it, whats the point, mtfu and cripple yourself longterm

Every Racer worth his salt would seek medical advice. You need to be fit. Do what it takes and if you have the funds go private for physio.

In engine terms.

Do you want to run on 3 cylinders all year, frustrated with the lack of power.
Or wait half a year, then run balls-out for the remainder.

[edit] Much can still be accomplished whilst the engine is getting repaired.

I may have to start calling you Munro

https://wfi.munro.cc/images/2.jpg

I get shoulder pain already if I overuse them. A grinding of the socket which is very unpleasant.

Ibuprofen helps bring the inflammation down, 'deep heat' around the bone and generally rotating/stretching the joint tend to lessen it. But rest is definitely key, it sometimes takes a week to bugger off.

Glucosamine works wonders as well. It's rare for me to get a problem with my shoulders when I'm taking it regularly. It may work for your proble, it may not, but I used it to continue training when my shoulders were telling me very clearly not to. Sounds a bit like your racing at present.

After breaking my shoulder blade and the socket to my shoulder a few years back I get pain every now and then. I use pain killers and anti-inflammatory when it flares up. However when I started getting numb fingers I went to the docks and found it was neck trouble. A bit of physio and it worked wonders. Same with my sciatica, had loads of pain, went to the Doctors and had physio, now when I get the leg pain I know what to do to help it. Doctors are just flesh mechanics.

I dislocated both shoulders while out on a snowboard season and the pain remained with me for years... The ligaments were weak and any odd tweak and id get pain and a feeling like my whole arm had pins and needles and was pretty painful.

Went to see a physio, they tried to make me do some weird movements... instead I banged out around 150 press ups a day (not consequtively) and after about 4 months the pain started to dissapear as the ligaments and muscles got stronger.

So if it is ligament/musle issues then go and do some workouts.

I will make an appointment this week, the problem is in the mess of muscle in front of the blade we think. Co Codamol and Tramadol help but I can not take them if I have work or on the track the next day.

Google "Rotator Cuff Injury".

My dad had a spur of bone grow on his right shoulder. It cut his rotator cuff muscles to shreds. They had to basically reconstruct his shoulder.

Ten years later and it happened to his left shoulder. This time, the infraspinatus tendon pinged off and disappeared into his biceps. By the time they got round to operating, the entire tendon had vanished. They performed a reverse joint replacement. He's now got a ball where there once was a socket, and vice versa. This is done so that the deltoid can take over the range of movement previously performed by the rotator cuff.

Four years ago I came off my bike on gravel and went down hard on my left shoulder. Since then my shoulder has got progressively worse, not helped by all the tool-pushing I do at work and the fact that I'm left-handed. Last week I went for an ultrasound scan of the area and am currently waiting for the results.

See, I got specifically told not to do excercises like that by my physio - she said it would buff up wrong muscles and would not help anything in the long run.
I used to play Rugby (Union) a lot and was dead good and then both shoulders died and I had an op on the L shoulder (keyhole surgery) and lots of physio for both and there is still lots of pain in both but it is more managable.

My non-professional advice; light physio 2 or 3 times a day and use an anti-inflammatory when the pain stops you sleeping etc. Any time in between just rest as much as possible (although if you race very often you can ignore that).
If you don't already, start playing guitar or piano or something. Nothing strenuous but something that keeps your fingers / arm(s) / ligaments / muscles moving.

I have made an appointment to see my new Dr on Thursday. One of my problems is my pain threshold is very high when my hip was replaced I never bothered with morphine until the third day post op and that was not due to pain, it was Sunday afternoon and I was bored so I decided to get mashed. When they did the morning bed round it was stated that I had no apparent sense of pain and I do not think I do. If I was asked what is the pain level from 1 to 10 in my shoulder I do not have the understanding to make that call, the most painful thing I ever experienced was an infected knee following a crash that caused it to swell to over double its circumference overnight. I still managed to kickstart and ride a bike to the hospital and change a tube due to a puncture. This was far worse than broken ribs and thumbs etc but I can imagine far worse pain than that.
My shoulder feels like a constant 3 to me but it is not a universal and standardised scale.
I walked and rode on my destroyed hip for three years, when the results of the x ray came in my Dr was horrified that I was still using it and just moaning about a "bit of an ache and stabbing pains".

Do what you have to, Ariel.
HT's analogy with the engine is spot on.
You wouldn't ride a bike into the ground, you'd have a bit of a fettle.

Except bikes are more forgiving than bodies, and they tend to stay fixed for longer.

Besides which ... if you don't solve the problem/s with your shoulders you may find that you lose mobility in them, and won't be able to reach round to wipe your arse when you get older.

Although I expect the District Nurse could find you a nice young helper to come along on a daily basis and wipe it for you Laughing

I will just go with whatever needs to be done to be rid of the pain, just checked and I still have your number. Last time I had surgery you were the fourth person I called after my Mother, my Ex and my Headteacher.

Well I got my scan results today.

Partial thickness tear of the Supraspinatus tendon. If it goes, that's me done riding.

Quack's referring me to a specialist to see if it can be repaired via surgery.

So, Badger, please seek medical advice before your arm is hanging uselessly by your side.

A very good point.

The missus has a couple of long term sporting injuries and visits a local sports physio magician.

Dont go to a normal, run of the mill, one size fits all clinic.
Make sure it's a sports clinic as the type of wizardry used is very different.

Of course! Laughing If I don't answer, I'm probably busy being ravaged, but I'll always call back Smile

Although ... one of the rare times Gerry's taken it into his head to call me, I was mid-blowjob.
