I've started a new job, where people in the office, will have a little puff on these little electric nicotine vaporisers.

It feels odd, but I guess it's not doing any harm. I dont believe that a little nicotine vapour in the air is as bad as the tar from cigarettes.

It's just that I'm so used to smokers going outside for their filthy habit, that it seems wierd that they can have their substitute inside.

Anyone else have this at their work ?

No, you must go outside for any kind of inhalation of nicotine products, the smoking area is for cigarettes, and people with these ridiculous E-Cigs can smoke them anywhere outside really, but not inside.

Irrespective of where they are designed to be used, a business can still enforce a policy whereby they have to be used outside.
Their site their rules.

It's only water vapour that's expelled (according to the guff) but I couldn't use one at work, even if it was ok to do so. I'd feel far too self-conscious.

Just to say, smoking e-cigs is legal indoors in the UK. If a company/place wants to ban them, they can, but it isn't illegal to smoke an e-cig indoors like a traditional cigarette. Some establishments in America are already banning their usage indoors though as people who smoke normal cigarettes complain endlessly about having to go outside to smoke, will probably happen here too, no doubt.

As for vapour, the only thing in the 'smoke' is water vapour and so is harmless to inhale, as are e-cigs, the contain nicotine and water, nothing really harmful. Nicotine may be addictive but in terms of harmfulness it's orders of magnitude below the stuff in 'normal' cigarettes unless you ingest pure nicotine in a massive dose somehow. Still, the vapour is just water vapour and disappates almost instantaneously.

I have converted my partner to e-cigs, bought her a great quality one and she loves it. The freedom to smoke indoors and anywhere she wants is great and it removes all the nasty stuff you can get from smoking pretty much. They are a brilliant innovation, but do have their drawbacks.

I personally don't smoke and I hate smoking, but e-cigs being smoked next to me cause no issues and I am looking forward to more people swapping. But don't let anyone tell you that you can't smoke them indoors, that is wrong, the UK smoking ban doesn't apply to e-cigs, for the time being, at least.

They give the perception of smoking, they are used as cigarettes for the purpose of the smoker. They should be treated in the same way as a cigarette.

Why do they give the perception of smoking?

Why are they used as a cigarette for the purpose of the smoker?

or Why should they be treated in the same way as a cigarette?

Ask a smoker for the first two and the third should be obvious because of the first two.

I am in the fork of a dilemma over these things, I am an ex smoker and know how hard it is to quit. At the last full governing meeting at my school one of the LA governors asked for these to be banned in school. The head said she had not heard of any usage but I know of a couple of lads that do use them. I have taken both of them on one side and told them of my previous smoking history and so many reasons why they should quit, I have never punished or threatened to punish them as I understand addiction and it is just not my style.
I know they are using these devices to get away from fags ( they are honest with me) I feel a ban would be a negative step.

At my place of work, they can be smoked in the canteen but not on the shop floor. Personally I think they should be treated the same as cigarettes.

Everything except the antisocial aspect.

No stink.
No yellow stains on the furnishings
No passive inhalation of chemicals
No filthy fag butts on the floor

Not similar at all really, any more than sucking on a lollipop.

I am a smoker, so I do know the answer to the first two, but I'm struggling for the answer to the third, in the context of this thread.

The basis of the smoking ban is the (some would say contentious) issue of passive smoking, where the received wisdom is that the smoke from the lit tobacco product, combined with the exhalations of the person smoking it, introduce potentially harmful chemicals into the atmosphere.

An e cig produces nothing more than water vapour and an infinitessimally small amount of nicotine, which is not, in itself, carcinogenic.

So why should an e cig be treated in the same way as a cigarette, within the workplace?

Edit: I should add that employers should be encouraging the widespread adoption of e cigs.

I wonder how many hours are lost each year, to fag breaks........

I think we can draw analogy between e-cigs and sex. I think most of us agree that penetrative sex has no place in the office, but is a bit of a wa*k ok if we feel the need? Best leave the room and do it in private IMHO.

Not a very good analogy.

Smoking indoors is banned because it was proven second hand smoke affected other people in the building. E-cigs do not and I see no reason why they should be banned.

I have been a smoker and now use e cigs as a substitute.

The 'vapour' is harmless.

It has no effect on 'others' and is far less offensive than a fart.

So once banning farting at work is in force I would support the banning of e cigs at work.

If they don't give the perception of a cigarette to the smoker and to those around, why make them look like a cigarette with smoke/steam. Why not have one that looks like a baby's dummy?
The perception to one and all is that they are a cigarette and so should be treated as such.
The sex analogy is quiet good, so would be, we don't allow naked women in the office, but we can have porn movies and pictures instead. Or you can't shit on the desk, but a plastic turd that steams is ok.

They are vapourisers, they vapourise which is why you get the tiny puff of vapour that disappears in a second.

Your perception is wrong.

That analogy is still bad. Laughing

Smoking was banned for being harmful, not for "looking like a cigarette". The only people bothered by them are pretentious non smokers who can't contain their emotions so have to release them like a plague upon society.

I don't smoke, but I have absolutely no issues with people if they wanted to do that indoors. No smell, nothing bad about it in my eyes.

So far, in this thread, no one has come up with any, valid, reasons why E-cigs shouldn't be smoked in the work place, or anywhere else for that matter.
Surely there is one! Wink

Come on nay sayers, consider it a challenge.

Also you all seem to have made a, huge, assumption that everyone with a E-cig in there gob is ingesting nicotine, which is not necessarily the case!

Agree with comment below. To be offended by the look of a cigarette is absurd. Next you will be offended by phalix looking monuments.

If it does not harm why be offended by the 'look' of something.

That arguement is seriously floored and you need to to examine your logic mr Spock. Very Happy

Perception is a valid point in the debate. If they were not made to look and act like a cigarette do you think that they would be so popular?
The people I have found using them have done so in a way that they are trying to stick two fingers up to the anti smoking lobby.
Like I said earlier, if it was like a dummy and you just sucked on it, do you think it would be as popular and would people still suck on it? It is that it looks and acts like a cigarette that appeals to the smoker and is unappealing to the non-smoker.

In the same way that ugly people should wear bags on their heads to avoid offending good-looking people?
