Rather a broad question but is there a significant difference between michelin pilot road and pilot road 3 to be greatly noticeable for at best an average rider (i.e. me)?

Also has anyone had experience of the Contiomotion tyre, particularly in relation to the PR2/3?

Thanks for any help.

Got conti motion fitted not long ago, 2000 miles into them and no signs of wear yet. Lovely feel to them. Tread pattern is good, confident in the wet. Cheap but cheerful. Id recommend them to anyone Thumbs Up

I've had various kinds of tires and I've never experienced any real difference. Thumbs Up

My last bike (GSX 750 W) had Pilot Road 3'S on and i found them brilliant in all weathers including snow on the Alps in February.
Personally speaking i found them the best all round tyre i have ever used ,although tyre choice is always subjective .

I assume that you mean Pilot Road 2s compared to Pilot Road 3s in your first question? If so, you probably won't notice a huge amount of difference between them for average use. I have PR2s on my Hornet, My OH has PR3s on her Zephyr - I ride both and find them excellent in both wet and dry conditions.

Nope, I mean the original Pilot Road compared to either of the newer versions. I have ridden Pilot Road 2's and 3's on various bikes so am aware (although a long time ago) what they are like.

Pilot Roads (1) and Contimotion are around £140 a pair at a place I know which is a fair saving on either PR 2 or PR3 so am trying to see whether the increase in price for a PR2/3 is worth it basically. I.e. I'm a bit skint/would prefer to spend money on other stuff than tyres if possible. Very Happy

I put conti motions on my bird because they were cheap, but so far they seem fine and pretty good in the wet. Think they were 145 a pair as opposed to my usual avons at 190 a pair. Thinking

There is a big difference between the road 1s and road 2s. I have the 1s fitted on my ZZR for the past few sets of tyres and have the 2s on my zx9r.

The main difference is that the pilot 1s are single compound so will square off quicker than the road 2s. The pilot road 2s are a much better tyre than the 1s as they give much better grip due to the softer edges.

I haven't ridden my zzr for a while as its off the road but I used to rag it about on the 1s and found them fine. the 1s are good in the wet (as are 2s).

I wouldn't be happy fitting pilot 1s to my ZX9r though as I wouldn't feel confident in them for the sort of riding I do on that bike.

The pilot 2s seem to last a very long time. (not made note of the milage or I would have told you).

The pilot 1s are good enough tyres especially if you don't really use your bike for enjoyment and mainly do commuting etc. I suspect they might have a cheaper pence per mile than the pilot 2s.

The answer is yes the difference will be noticeable for an average rider imo.

Thanks, tyres will be going on a litre twin primarily for fun, although this is pretty sedately paced. Will probably give the ContiMotions a go and see how they fare up.

If you're on a budget you can get Diablo Stradas for £140 a pair. They're ok.

I did a road and track review of PR3's on here.

I put Conti's onto the Firestorm. Couldnt diss them. Everyone said I would die a horrid death because they are not suited to V2 riding (why I have no idea) but they are great. Been on there for around 3K miles now and still have shedloads of life in them.

I have found that confidence in a tyre is more than the sum of the tyre. I used to use Michelins and lost confidence in them, switched to Conti trail attacks and all was fine again, my riding probably really won't get to the limit of the tyre to compare each, but I have confidence in one set over another.

I've reached the limit of my tyres twice in the past week - PR3s. Locked up the back end under braking and spun up the back end on the way out of a surprisingly slippery corner. I still have confidence in them though - they are far, far better than the OEM ditch finders that I had as the last set of tyres before I moved to PRs...

I do admit, as you probably do, that while I found the limit of the tyres I was probably miles away from the limit of the bike/tyre combo and it was purely rider error that loaded them up so much at the wrong moment.

Yep budget is an issue, but I just dont think I will utilise these newer tyres qualities/the slightly older versions are more than good enough for me.

Never been a massive fan of Pirelli's so will give them a miss. Gonna go for the ContiMotions I think. They seem to have good reviews and from what Ive read they seem to be what my riding is like.

I ebayed a PR3 rear for my CBR600. £55 delivered, 5mm tread left Smile Ive still got a dunlop D208? on the front with 4mm left, which should be ok as its grippier, although perhaps not in the wet. Thoughts on this combo?
Getting it fitted next week for about 15 quids Mr. Green

That's what I meant Laughing

having the confidence in the tyre to play around is, I find, the most important thing.

The Lord of all Gods Baal.

Thought to have been the first Devil as he is noted in all the main religions as such, was ridiculed at one time, also thought to be part of the Knights Templar movement.

well I suppose after yesterday not many folks will be rushing out to buy Pirelli tyres any time soon , Dont think Lewis Hamilton has a lot of faith in his tyres any more
