Anyone know any good tips I can use/do to lower my insurance at 17? I have been riding a 50 on L plates since June 2012 but my bike was stolen December so I won't have one years no claims until December coming is it worth waiting until then? My cheapest quote on a WR125x
Yamaha was £2,500 Sad

Buy something that's less obviously a thief-magnet. Anything old, and not supermoto/crosser-shaped. Wait until you've got a big bike before buying anything pretty, because it's really just all show and no go when it's a 125.

There are no good 125s, because they're all so easy to nick and tend to be ridden by crash merchants - not you, other 17 year olds Wink

Think more like a Honda CG or Yamaha YBR though. Maybe even a Suzuki Van Van or Honda Varadero, they might be slightly more likely to be ridden by Careful Now types.

But really, you've going to have to just hit up the comparison sites and try out different bikes until you get a sweet spot.

Presumably from your theft experience you know that it's far better to not have a bike stolen in the first place than have to claim on it and get raped on excess and premium hikes?

My policy is to buy bikes that I can afford to lose. There's no way I'd claim on anything worth less than £1K, and that's taking into account that I'm a geezer with low premiums. At your age, its barely worth claiming on anything.

Hi there

You might have of got £1500 back, but the insurance companies will always get there money back from claims Sad

Get a nice cheap 125 and build up your NCB again and try and make your next bike as secure as posable Wink good disk lock, chain and lock and even a alarm if you can.

as above a Honda cg.. no one will even think about nicking it. I had one for 4 months before my nsr, they go from a to b. there's a decent one on ebay for £900 if this helps. There bulletproof. but don't expect to go fast on one.

They're still good fun though IMO! (although I've only ever rode a CG)

oh yes don't get me wrong I liked it, but to a 17 year old a bike is a status symbol. its a workhorse and cheap for spares or bash it. You cant argue with them.

This is part of the reason you are now only getting insano quotes.

That and you have a 'theiving chav magnet' for a bike.

Were you looking at fully comp? Perhaps best as everyone else has said to get somthing that you can use and it wont ou you anything and just get the cheapest insurance ie 3rd party.
My first bike was a yamaha xt125, insurance was 229 with no ncb (this was when i was 17)

When I had my ybr people came up to me so often to tell me what a great bike I had it got boring, one auld Irish fella even said "ahh tell me nouw, is dat a 250 or a 500 yer have dere?" Very Happy

No fucker complements my Fazer Rolling Eyes

Anyhow only one way to reduce insurance costs, do what I did, lose your hair, grow a big grey beard and try not to crash too often while your doing it. Sorry but that's life.

Honda CG is a great bike for insurance, I'm 17 and have got 1 year NCB from a 50cc Moped and my premium for a CG125 is 251. Not bad.

To the OP,

Try a Suzuki Marauder 125, if you like the cruiser type they are really good, I had an 03 one from 2010-the end of 2013, not many problems, loved it, it may not be built for speed but it looks good while going slow, top speed of (65-70)

got my '98 Honda NSR 125 at 18 on a provisional. Cost me £600 for the bike, first years insurance was £550 TPFT. Rode it for 3-4 years, came off it twice, sold it for £650.

If you buy a cheap 125 and keep it running its almost impossible to lose money on it.
