long time reader first time poster here!

After a few years without a bike, I'm thinking of getting a CBR 600. One that I've seen is 1998, 13,000 miles in black, about £1,600.

The only thing I am unsure of is that it has a GSX rear. Is this is normal mod and is there anything I should be wary of?

At the end of the day it's just a bit of plastic, so as long as everything works, lights, indicators and everything looks neat and tidy, I would treat it as nothing more. That being said, I'd be wondering what prompted them to change it, has it been down the road, etc?

That pillion seat looks uncomfortable.. Laughing

Not bad money, but you'll find 2000 reg Thundercats in mint condition for that.

You could get a J model ZX6R for that. Hence why I keep telling people that steel framed CBR's aren't good value.

I contemplated a CBR600 because it seemed like a safe bet. In the past I had the rocket powered armchair, the CBR1000.

I should have mentioned that I'm based in France (don't worry, I'm not French!!!) so prices are higher and availability not as good as the UK.

I've got a 250cc D-tracker that I brought back from Thailand. The French won't allow me to register it here so it is sat in the shed, it's only done 900km.

In my twenties I always fancied the ZZR600, is the ZX600 better? Sorry for the newbie questions!!

The ZX6R is alloy framed, so it's lighter than the steel framed CBR and very much lighter than the ZZR. The handling is good, the power is good, tyre choice is huge, it is comfortable and practical.

I can't think of a better all rounder TBH.

I have never owned a zx6 but i will have one, its on my list! I did have a CBR 6 tho, similar year to that one.. epic bikes, cant rate them highly enough.

Cant go wrong unless its s shed, this one looks tidy except for the monstrosity on the back NEEDS to go! And I also would be questioning why it's there at all.

hmmmm, the ZX6's seem to be ok round these parts.

The one with the funky paint job is 1995, £1,600, 30,000kms. The red one is 1999, £1,800, 22,000kms, it has a Yoshimura exhaust. The green one is a 1998, £1,600 and 66,000kms.

shims need checking or replacing every 8k miles on the Kawasaki ZX6R which is the main reson why i never got one!

what kind of an engine needs that doing at only every 8k miles

R6 & GSXR600 do not need the valve clearances until around 24k
I have no knowledge on hondas so cant comment

if you get the J model kawasaki ask to see evidence that this was done or budget for it to be done if you cant do it yourself.

i was gutted as i really wanted a J model back in 2003 and choose an R6 instead because of that and the fact their is no low petrol warning light

from having a ride on it the J model zx6r is the most comfortable sports bike i have ever been on the only other thing i hated was the fact it had NO FUEL warning light or gauge so you have to use the trip meter after every petrol fill up to monitor your petrol usuage and after 2 years of doing that with my honda vfr nc30 theres no way im going through that again.

You can get a alu framed CBR6 for your price, which I suspect is a much better bike, but Ive never ridden a steelie. Look for a scratched one, get a chinese fairing kit. It will look better than a "good condition" 1998 bike Thumbs Up

1998 bike with only 13,000 miles. Sure bikes are toys but if its only had that milage, will it have been serviced and looked after? riden only 866 miles per year... (5 tanks of fuel??!?)

I would bet it still has the original fork oil and shims never checked
