You can pick up second hand Nexus 7's for under £100 now.

The only experience I've had of those generic Chinese android tablets is one my nan bought off the shopping channel. Rolling Eyes It's painfully slow and clunky and has a WiFi range of about a meter. I wouldn't recommend it.

FWIW I was playing with the Medion 10" and 7" tablets in Asda the other night. IIRC about £180 and £100. I liked them. I liked the fact it has bluetooth and two cameras, one facing each way so you can take pics and also do skype type stuff. Not all have that.

Link to 7 inch, 10 inch doesn't appear to be Asda online buyable but it is on the Medion.co.uk site.

Probably can get these or similar cheaper but it is a sort of named brand and I now like buying from an established bricks and mortar shop.

I picked up a cheapo on fleabay for the kids to abuse a while back. Battery life was woeful - barely a couple of hours. A bigger battery from china helped but it is leagues behind my old man's nexus.

Much as I hate to say it, it's worth punting out £140 for a Nexus 7 from PC World. I had a cheapo chinese pad and the only remarkable thing about it was its inadequacy.

Just picked up a second hand nexus 7 with a case for £100 on fleabay - have to say it's miles ahead of some of the cheaper no name things.

I'll chime in on this one, the cheapo unbranded tablets are generally fault ridden junk.

A bit more than secondhand but condition guaranteed and 12 months warranty seemed worth it.

I'm writing this on a cheap tablet I picked yesterday for 70 eur from a Portuguese supermarket. A "TAC-70072" imported by a danish firm called Denver. I fully intend to get something like a nexus 7 back in the uk, this is an experiment to see if I like tabs plus use up remaining holiday money.

So far for 70eur this thing is excellent. As a cheap and disposable device to check email etc while travelling it seems pretty good. Time will tell if the battery lasts... it managed three hours out of the box without charging. Feels a little more sluggish than my aspire one netbook but still use pretty useable. I'm used to getting pissed off waiting for the aspire to load stuff and this tab isn't that much worse.

Specs areu

1.2 GHz CPU
1 Gb Ram
8 Gb onboard storage (micro SD slot too)
800 x 480 screen ( about as bad as tablets come I believe, seems to be okay for what I need)

Basically after 2 months of travelling with only an ancient BlackBerry to access the internet, which wont even load lots of websites, this shit tablet is awesome. Let's hope it lasts.
