 |

Hey,
I have a friend (honestly, it isn't me ) who wants to sit his CBT. The problem is... he's quite a hefty lad. 6'3, 27st. In the process of losing it all (finally realised that keeping up his previous lifestyle was killing him... anyway, moving on). He just wants a scooter (adamant he doesn't want a bike - doesn't want to fuck about with gears). He even had driving lessons in an automatic car before giving up through not liking his instructor.
My question is... what are his options? He's telling me he's going to do his CBT on a scooter but I'm worried with his height he'll just bang his knees on the bars, and his weight will just make an already slow scooter worse. I've convinced him a 4 stroke 125cc scooter will be better (used the "nobody over 16 has a 50cc scooter because they can have a 125" reasoning) but I'm just worried a scooter is bad idea even though he doesn't want a proper bike.

He should be ok doing his CBT, It will be cramped but its possible.
As for scooters there's loads out there, Suzuki Burgman 125, Piaggio X8 X9 X10, Honda s-Wing 125, Sym Joyride the sym's not a bad cotter if you buy new.
There is alot more That will be good for his size, i Have ridden the S-Wing and the power is quite good its bang on 15bhp i believe. ____________________ My opinion is neither copyrighted nor trademarked. If you like, I'll trade for one of yours.

Constructive. Thanks.

Okay, for a start, if you're going to insult him, learn to spell. It's bastArd. Secondly - it's motoRcycle. Thirdly, he doesn't want to arse about with gears but if you'd read the OP you've have fucking noticed that he'd already had driving lessons in an automatic because he didn't want to drive a manual car. Lastly, he has a gym membership - he's already lost a stone and a half. Not a lot in the grand scheme of things but at least he's doing something with his fucking life unlike you who just seems quick to judge and a bit of a prick because you can't read.

Which is why I said get a 125cc, not a 50cc. He is losing weight but these things obviously take time, but as we all know thanks to the wankers in Brussels, it now takes a lifetime to be able to ride anything worth riding (I'm not saying that because of his weight, it's the same for me - I'm stuck on a 125 for 3 years because doing my A2 at 23 isn't worth the money so I may as well wait until i'm 24 and do DAS).
To the few who actually had something constructive, thanks. To the other fuckers - I didn't put a question in the New Bikers forum for you to go "hurr durr he's a fat fuck tell him to go the gym" - he knows his lifestyle has to change, he doesn't need some tossers on a forum to tell him that. |

Off your high horse, you didn't even ask a specific question. Are you asking what scooter he should get, or how you could persuade him to get a geared bike?
Assuming the former, a Burgman 125 is probably the best size fit for His Lardship although it's under-powered. He'd be far, far better off getting licensed up, and don't say he can't afford it, his pie shop bills along should cover it.
On the latter, he may find that training schools aren't replete with scooters suitable for sitting any tests on, including A1. I'm fairly sure that the CBT school I went to only had 50cc peds rather than 125 scooters, and he'd be quicker pushing them up hills.
And maybe if forum fuckers - or his mates - had ripped the piss out of him for being a fat lazy cunt then he wouldn't have got to this stage. The tears will shed a few ounces. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Said forum tossers aren't wrong, though. A 125 will struggle with that kind of load: that's the equivalent of myself, my OH and some shopping on a 125. Not a combo I'd willingly inflict on a bike.
More to the point, time spent pedalling might also give him some insight into just how exposed bikers are on the road, prior to making an expensive investment. ____________________ '10 SV650SF, '83 GS650GT (it lives!), Questionable DIY dash project, 3D Printer project, Lasercutter project |

Actually, I did - I asked what his options were with regards to what 125cc scooters are good for bigger people because I know the majority of them are farty little things, even at 125 size. I didn't ask for people to give abuse because of his weight. He knows he needs to change and is doing so - what more can you ask him to do? When was the last time you made a major lifestyle change? |

So has he tried a manual one? When I did my CBT (end July this year) The instructor said if we couldn't get away with manual we could learn automatic and go back later and do manual gearing. I thought I would never manage it. Now I ride a CBR 125 25 miles to work and love it! And if it hadn't been for my mate gently(?) coercing me( again questionable?!) into riding a geared bike I would be regretting not going for it. Push him as hard as you can into geared. Even if he does just get a scooter at the end at least he tried...which kiddies is the most important thing in life....Just Try.....
Oh and 5 miles? He be better getting a push bike....as we know the saying....one bike costs money and makes you fat, the other runs on fat and saves you money.....
one legged? Should have a wooden pirates leg as a substitute and a parrot...and a beard....and only 1 eye....arggghhhh matey |

Nope, never ridden a bike. Driven a manual car but changed to auto because of an issue he was having with his left foot at the time, that being said it's fine now so theoretically no reason why he can't.
Having said that a manual bike is a piece of piss compared to a car.
| no.folly wrote: | 5 miles he'd be better building up some running strength and jogging it. He'd lose weight faster than cycling.
If it's gears he's worried about and he;s going to go for lessons/cbt whatever, surely the place he'll end up at will have both automatic and manual? He should just try a manual bike and then if he totally hates it he can flop off and onto an automatic (unless thats not how these things work). That way at least he's tried. Sounds like a confidence issue to me. |
The place I did mine at had geared 125 bikes and 50cc automatic scooters so they had both. You can go from one to the next if you don't get on, pretty sure you can.
| J.M. wrote: |
Um, you can get your A2 at 19. That allows you to ride over 125cc.
You can do direct access on whatever you like providing that it has enough power. However do it on an automatic and that's all you'll be allowed to ride. Here's a list of suitable bikes: https://www.dft.gov.uk/motorcycle-test-vehicle-list/
A "DAS Course" is not the only way to take an A licence. You can buy your own bike, get lessons at leisure and then book the tests yourself too. But I doubt all that many places will have automatic bikes available for DAS courses, as most people will want a manual licence. |
You need an A1 for 2 years before you can get your A2. That's the problem - I'm only on a CBT so even if I passed my A1 right now, I'd be 11 months short of 24 when I could sit my A2 so it's not worth doing it. I can put the 500 quid it'll cost towards my unlimited licence.
I'll have a chat with him anyway - didn't realise there was an auto/manual bike licence. If he wants even a big scooter (250cc plus) he will need to pass his A2 which involves geared bikes more likely than not. |
