Can anybody recommend any books for GCSE and A-level maths revision?

Although I did maths at A-level a LONG time ago I can only really remember fragments and slowly figure things out.

I am in need of a bit of a refresh and thought I'd be proactive about this.

Apparently the upping of the school leaving age and encouragement of STEM subjects means that FE colleges are going to force many people to do maths till they are 19.

Because of this in tandem with the MA I mentioned I might get the government to pay for a maths teaching qualification just in case other things don't work out.

The above is exactly what is wrong with the education system in this country.

People without good knowledge of maths and no real interest in the subject, or teaching. Gets a job teaching purely because the government will pay it for them Rolling Eyes

The best teachers I have ever had, are the ones who actually enjoyed and understood the subject they was teaching

Simple there aren't enough people like that to teach the volume of students.

One big hole in your argument.

I'm currently a teacher already. I've had my teaching qualification for over a decade nearly two in fact. I bugged out for a while to run my own business but I came back.

My specialisms are languages and business studies (which includes elements of economics and maths).

I see dark clouds on the horizon and thus think I need to retrain before they arrive. A biggie is the massive funding cuts across the board. Where the government would fund 150 hours, they are going to fund 50 in the very near future.

Although this does not affect me as I work in the private sector while I can see the repercussions of this.

Have a look at the ESOL thread, it peeves me off about unqualified teachers and flip floppers.

I bought K.A.Stroud Engineering Mathematics for my Computer Science degree because I really needed to learn the A-Level stuff and will be advancing on it next (this) year.

It's a big book. I don't remember exactly what is taught at GSCE now, but the book covers quite a lot. It might be too advanced for GCSE, which I'm guessing that Nick thinks as he has not suggested the book. It covers some quite basic things at the start of the book though.

I've never been a fan of Strouds books to be honest. That being said I know many who are.

Also i'm much more of a visual learner, so I find videos of someone talking through a problem much better than a book doing it.

The books I recommended is from one of the A-Level examining boards and they are the official books for A-Level maths (for that exam board).

The website list is from my step-daughters maths lecturer as she happens to be starting A-Level maths on Monday Laughing

The bulk of that isn't needed for GCSE or A-Level. It's aimed at people who have already got their GCSE and A-level and are doing first year maths modules in Engineering.

This is probably the best book on calculus ever written. It helped me after many years of never quite understanding it. Even better it's nearly 100 years old so out of copyright and free Smile

There are so many different books out there that it eventually comes down to what suits you. I teach mainly from the Oxford Edexel Books and get on quite well with them.

A lot of the OU publications are very good. At first I thought you might be interested in doing an OU course, so I looked some up and nearly fell off my chair at how much they cost nowadays. Could you get your employers to fund the Diploma in Mathematics Education?

I used these to teach myself A-level Maths. Got A* when I took the exams Dance!.

Advancing Maths for AQA: C1 & C2.

Advancing Maths for AQA: C3 & C4.

It was tough to get into the swing of things when I opened up the first book, but after a couple of chapters it really began to flow, it was felt pretty easy to be honest. Specially because there are shitloads of practice questions so you can cement everything into your brain good and proper.

With the knowledge I got from those books alone, I would be more than happy to teach A-level maths to anyone who asked me.
