Ive started a little savings fund for second bike. All sorts of bikes cross my mind as potential rides. If I got a sportsbike what would be a good one to start with. I wouldent want some mad 150bhp litre bike to start with so what would folks advise?

That depends how long you'd like to save for and what your budget will be.

Speed Triple? Slightly left field suggestion:

Good points. Enough power, decent handling, nice sound.
Bad points. Windblast at high speed, OEM mirrors are awful.

Say a budget of two grand.

Speed triple would be nice any day of the week but its a street style bike.

Still sticking with the GSXR750 for that range.

Other criteria would be, fuel injected and at least 6 months MOT. Under ten years old would be preferable but not an absolute. Also don't want a bike that's sat in a garage for two years getting all gummed up.

As I've learned here, check the insurance rates first, then decide. Thumbs Up

I'd go for any 400cc in-line four, ZXR, CBR, FZR, GSXR, XJR, CB-1, CB400SF and so on. Fun to ride, fast enough and you can feel like a GP rider all day long. I got ZX7R after CB-1 and I find the zxr a bit boring, in a way. What I thought was fast on the CB is not anymore and when I push the zxr I get to a point where it starts to be a bit scary, if you know what I mean. I tried to run the zxr like it was a 400cc bike and wow, 200kph is not that magical as it seemed back in the days I had the CB-1. I can't even imagine what's an 1000cc motorcycle going to be like. Thumbs Up

Whats the remit?
Sunny-Sunday Special? or has it got to work for its living as an all-rounder?
Sunny-Sunday Special, just for shit & giggles, I'd suggest a hooligan 125 two-stroke 'full-power' for the road; limited performance means you have to work the bike to get it, and you can get that reward at speeds not so likely to endanger life or licence.
If you want to expand a bit & maybe do track-days? Then ZX6R is a lot of bike for the money... read 'Crasheable'.

If the thing has to earn its keep getting you to work? CBR6 has to be top choice; but a Thundercat probably where the smart money would go. But jack-of-all-trades... away from focused track-bike with lights; how much practicality and every-day livability do you need, and how much of it are you prepared to sacrifice for that 'sports-bike' feel?

Tef. Purely for fun but I don't want the hassle of a sports two stroker.

That is some superb insight into 600cc sports bikes, please, tell me more.

What experience have you had regarding them?

Thing is, it was relevant this time, because I've never seen him race a ZX6R, wondered how he got the insight to choose that specific 600 sports. Laughing
