Hi All,

Is there some sort of software that will allow me to increase the volume of our laptop?

For using things like iPlayer our laptop can be pretty useless without auxiliary speakers or headphones. Programs such as VLC allow us to increase the volume to 200% which makes it usable, not brilliant but good enough. I'm after a program that will do the same thing for any sounds being outputted through the laptop.

The sound is up at full volume before anybody suggests it, it's just a bit of a shoddy laptop.

Thanks

https://www.ebuyer.com/388473-xenta-bluetooth-speaker-lt-201eby

edit assuming your laptop has bluetooth, if not a USB - mini bluetooth dongle is ~£13

I quite like the look of that but it doesn't really solve the issue, I have speakers I can use when needed but sometimes it is nicer to just play a video, just simple stuff on youtube where I cant be bothered to faff around plugging speakers or headphones in.

Have you checked all the soundcard (advanced volume stuff I guess) settings to see if you have any volume boosts in there? Sometimes you can increase the bass and treble, or have graphics equalisers that will get a bit more sound out.

To be honest it's something I've never really looked into with my laptop as I have to keep turning it down.

Edit

Just found this if you're using Windows 7:

1. Right click on "speak icon" on the right corner of the display
2. Click "Playback devices"
3. Under Playback Tab, click "Speaker -HD Audio Device" and then click "Properties"
4.Under Enhancements Tab, check on "Loudness Equalization", then click OK

Yeah, Google, smart guy.

I've been looking for a solution for a while, unsurprisingly I have Googled it once or twice and not found what I'm after. I'm asking here to see if anybody knows of some software I haven't found.

I'm not aware of any way to push the sound output from the soundcard higher over the volume level settings.. as Andym mentioned it's worth checking the advanced sound / mixer tab settings though, depending on your version of windows there might be extra settings that you can tweak, under win7 for example you can tweak volume settings for each program individually, but I wouldn't expect that to increase the maximum over the top.

Other thing to check depending on age of laptop, does it have a physical volume control as well as the on screen options? i.e. most Dells have physical volume up, down & mute buttons, my old Toshiba had a physical volume level wheel on the front near the lid catch.

By the way, I understand the point about not wanting hassle when just playing something quick, but a bluetooth usb dongle is tiny and could easily be left plugged into a spare usb port all the time, the speakers could be left on, whenever you're in range the speakers would work and give you better sound without having wires trailing accross the room or having to plug in / switch on?

Actually, did have one thought.. does your laptop os / speakers control have an equaliser system?

On my desktop it's under control panel / sound / speakers / properties / enhancements > tickbox for Equaliser..

If i put this one I get some presets (rock/pop/dance/etc) but can also choose "user define" then go into a graphic EQ page.. you'd probably gain a little volume if you shoved all the level right up? dunno what it'd sound like though.

There's also a "loudness equalization" setting that alters my volume level if I put it on, dunno how much of this is specific to win7 or to my motherboard's soundcard system though.

edit aaand I read the rest of the posts and Andy picked up on exactly this a few hours ago sorry! Very Happy

Of course, it's much more productive to sit there reading other people's guesses about what you have or haven't tried with your unspecified hardware.

Laptop speakers are puny little things at the best of times
theres only so much you'll get out of them.

Apart from checking the audio driver software and windows settings
Have you tried VLC player?
Its free, will play just about any media file and you can boost the sound
output to >120% on its control bar
It got an equaliser and stuff too

I use that and GOM player which is free and has similar options
They're great IMO with little of the irritating naus and shite
of winders meeja player

You want to ask whoever codes porn videos. I'll be watching a film on, say, 25 volume and it's just loud enough to hear. Stick on some porn and they can hear it three streets away on 1 volume. Embarassed
