Proof that Apple are the money-grabbing set of ballbags that I always suspected they were.

IF YOU CAN DO THIS, WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST FIT A MICRO USB LIKE EVERY OTHER FUCKING MANUFACTURER SO I DON'T HAVE TO BUY EXTRA KIT. DICKS.

It let them make the phone smaller, they also use the port for far more uses than other manufacturers do with their charging ports.

I understand the move to a different connector, I just think they should have used an industry standard so everybody was happy.
Also, they're roughly the same size:

Lightning:
Pin 1 GND ground
Pin 2 L0p lane 0 positive
Pin 3 L0n lane 0 negative
Pin 4 ID0 identification/control 0
Pin 5 PWR power (charger or battery)
Pin 6 L1n lane 1 negative
Pin 7 L1p lane 1 positive
Pin 8 ID1 identification/control 1

USB:
Pin 1 VCC (+5 V)
Pin 2 Data−
Pin 3 Data+
Pin 4 Ground

So... lightning has 2 data 'lanes' and 2 ID/control lanes. It means they can pass data back and forth more than twice as quickly. They can also do some proprietary control stuff.

Also... for a start the iPad USB chargers have not been USB spec for a while due to the higher current draw available.

I don't like it, but standards are a mixed blessing. They obviously help consumers in many respects, but they also cause stagnation within an industry as everyone needs to support the standard and can't do any cool stuff that wasn't thought of when the standard was implemented.

But the other end of the cable is still a USB? No matter how clever they make their end, it's still just four pins on the connector.

Which is why standards keep getting updated.

Apple just like to not fit in with the rest, so they have a captive market.
I wonder how much they charge ALL the co's who fit the port onto devices.....

The new cables are shite, I've seen so many of them broken and frayed near the connector, both official apple ones and cheaper replacements.

Apple may be forced to drop Lightning connector for MicroUSB

Seems I'm not the only one who thinks this... Dance!

once they fit that standard connector, a lot of proprietary controls I imagine will be lost, search as ipod control from external sources in cars, and docks etc.

If you want industry standards, don't buy Apple. Simple.

I prefer phones to have a physical keyboard rather than touch only.

Unfortunately, I seem to be the only one who likes to have the ability to touch-type and they simply don't sell phones like that in the UK unless it's a budget model.

Lightning connector is reversible to isn't it? ie doesn't matter which way round you insert it.

I believe the next gen usb connector will be the same but that could be a fair way off until we see it on everyday gadgets.

No, macs have a lightning on the other end. Lightning->Lightning is what they're really after.

On whose timescale though... Why should a company hold back it's great development* for the standards committee's approval and then hand over that competitive advantage to everyone?

As I said, standards have upsides and downsides, they help and hinder companies and customers.

Seems I'm not the only one who thinks this...

That would be ridiculous! EU interference at this level would stifle creativity and advancements and ultimately hurt customers. I'm all for voting with my wallet, but getting lawmakers involved is overkill and ends up hurting consumers.

Take the idea to an extreme and you'll eventually not be able to buy a games console as all computing devices need to be standardised...

You see, that's not standards either... it's a USB / MHL two different adaptors with the same shape interface is always a pain for companies. I wonder how many calls samsung have had saying "I plugged the phone into the TV and don't get a picture" given that all TVs have a USB on them nowadays.

<edit> Why do I always end up on the side of defending apple or MS? I don't even have a preference. I do like a certain level of freedom though and if people are willing to pay for non-standard devices then so be it. Even better, you get one free when you buy the phone... Where's the hassle?

I could understand it if they were exactly the same function and just an annoying shape, but in this case lightning is better than USB.

True, but at least the charger/data transfer is standard. Not sure they advertise the fact it can be plugged into a tv either, know loads of galaxy s3/s4 owners who didn't have a clue you could use otg or mhl

Not only that, standard MHL adaptor won't work with the S3 as the reversed the pin layout, had to use the genuine samsung one.

Found out the hard way!

Now that really does suck. Standard functionality with a purposely screwed up pin layout just to enforce purchase from samsung. As I edited in up there, at least lightning is a genuine improvement.

Although I do like how the discussion went... RAAARgh RAARgh apple! Samsung are all kinds of androidy goodness! Oh, wait they're not, they're actually as bad if not worse...
