This is my 'new' bike - the frame I got for £100 from ebay, it is from a Saracen 'Galibier', full carbon fork, carbon seat stays. Crucially it has a 1 1/8" steerer, my old one was a 1" steerer and getting parts for it was difficult, really bad water ingress etc etc.
All the other bits I transferred over, and added some mudguards, which are simply amazing to have. I've had it 4 months now and I am very pleased with it, and since I cleaned it very recently it was worthy of a photo!

Since I've nearly finished my new mountain bike, I need to do something with the old one.
Can't sell it because I've deliberately flattened the chainstays to take a wider 29"er tyre. I also need a bike for at work because I currently drive up to the pie shop so work bike it is.
I will be doing no more than 2 miles at a time on this bike. The first mile almost all up a steep-ish hill, the second back down with a bag of pies so it doesn't need to be particularly comfortable or light but will need fairly low gearing.
Still had the old tyres it came with lying about (reall horrors, say made in Bangladesh on the side but a 28" road tyre).
Rattled the box o' bits and came up with a 16t freewheel, a couple of old alloy pedals, a set of MTB handlebars, a really old, rediculously long and low quill stem and an adapter to fit it to 1 1/8". I even found the offcut of the chain that was on it to add some links.
Ordered a bigger 1/8" front sprocket and also had to order a dropout saver because I'd stripped the thread on the hanger that holds the singleator. Really simple little fix, I'm pleased and impressed such a thing exists. Basically you drill out the stripped hole and push one of these into it.

Anyway. I hereby name this bike "Hipster nonsense". It still needs bar-tape fitting. Red and on order. I find the shape pleasing. It is not as uncomfortable to ride as it looks like it should be although the steering is weird with the pivot point being so far back from the bars.

My charge in 'daily transport' mode.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18968307/pics/somestuff/charge.jpg
At some point I'll play about with the back-rack a bit more, but still did ok with a 15kg bag of dog food tied ontop and stuff in the panniers for a 7-8 mile ride how.
Even had the muffs off in the daytime yesterday!
For one reason or another, I seem to be happier with the flat bars now - kept umming and ahhing about getting a drop-bar road bike, but quite happy with this for the moment now (It's got a 34/50 compact front and 11-34 rear cassette - would like a 54 on the big one ideally, but as it is, similar to a lot of road bikes). |

One of these. I'd like a larger cog on the front though as even for a fat fucker like me I max out the revs in top. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

There have been some modifications to the steed of late. The chainset was utterly knackered, impossible to tighten on the tapered bottom bracket, rear derailleur geet wonky as owt, rims worn way past their limits, headset bottom bearing shagged and seat disintegrating. Winter had taken its toll. Since the last pic it has had:
- Ambrosio hollowtech copy chainset and BB
- Upgraded to 10 speed Veloce shifters
- 10 speed cassette
- Shimano Ultegra 10 speed chain
- Veloce 10 speed derailleur
- Cheapo Ritchey saddle, which is damn nice, actually
- Two new sets of wheels, as I destroyed the new Fulcrum 7's when smacking a crater in the road on a group ride. Replaced by some heavily discounted semi aero Fulcrum Racing Quattros.
- Schwalbe Durano Plus tyres, which are absolutely fucking amazing
Since the cable outers I got with the levers were black I had to match the bar tape, so we have a departure from the red scheme, now I am rocking the stealth look.
This is how it looked today after a wash:

Much like DOG who appears to ride in the winter even more than I do according to Strava, my winter all year round bike was falling to bits. The chainrings were worn which was a good excuse to complete the 105 groupset by replacing the FSA Gossamer chainset with a 105 one.
Bottom headset bearing was leaking rust which is never any good so replaced that.
Shifting was poor so completely overhauled all cables.
Swapped the 12-27 cassette for a 12-30 cassette so that no hill above 25% will defeat me with an eye on the Fred Whitton challenge next year.
Red bar tape as red is faster.
Also going to enter some 10 mile time trials this year, so put on some cheapo tri-bars.
Was pretty chuffed that I did this all myself with the help of Shimano techdocs documents and my father-in-laws Park Tool set.
