PostPosted: 11:45 - 31 Dec 2013    Post subject: James mays meccano motorcycle Friday 3rd jan 9:00 bbc2 Reply with quote

James May attempts to build a motorbike and sidecar entirely out of Meccano to take round the Isle of Man's famous TT circuit. But designing a machine capable of carrying James and his passenger, wine expert Oz Clarke, around the daunting 37-mile course is not a task for the faint-hearted.

Fifteen thousand pieces of Meccano must be assembled to create a full-size, road-legal motorcycle that James hopes will be more than a match for the circuit's treacherous twists and turns, steep climbs and dizzying descents. And as in the real TT, the bike must race against the clock.

May was taught how to be a presenter by Clarkson. When you hear may speak, in your mind, replace his voice with Clarkson's - You'll notice that all the intonation etc is the same. Considering he's had quite a few years doing Top Gear and his other spinoffs, his presentation skills are poor.

May went to the Clarkson school of "We could make this really good, but let's make it shit instead". Watch any of May's other programs and you'll see they're all the same. There's never any detail in them at all. Ergo, it's going to be shit again.

I'm pretty sure that "Man Lab" was aimed at 8 year olds.

Given the same number of years that he's been at it I would be a better presenter, as would you.

I presume Oz Clarke isn't going to be pissed, yet again, when he does this.

I hope they used a torque wrench and some thread lock on all those nuts. I'd be worried about bits falling off due to vibration. Laughing

Novel idea. Hopefully be stronger than a K'nex or lego equivalent.

Seen a few programs with May on his own. IMHO he has ended up with 2 different presenting styles. He is either in Top Gear mode, where his personality blends with Clarkson & Hamster. Kinda enjoyable, mildly amusing captain slow. His other personality is wildy enthusiastic about some sort of technical (or other) wonder. When he is in enthusiastic mode he looks like hes genuinly really getting into what he is presenting. Ever see the Model Railway program he did? I really wanted them to succeed in that, and had hope it might. It certainly wasnt the obvious run of the mill 'oh look the trains broken and a helicopters just landed on it' kinda affair.

Never seen Man Lab, but sounds like that was Top Gear mode.

Fair play to them for completing a lap of the TT Course, although I seem to remember it taking around 42 hours to do so, not quite up to Superbike pace of around 17 mins per lap! Laughing

I agree, without them colouring his personality, he comes across as someone genuine and enjoying all his new experiences, be it driving a Evoque across the desert or building a house out of Lego. I think that's part of it - that we're meant to project ourselves through him (matron) and get a sense of the fun through his wonder at it all as he always comes in with some background in whatever's being done but learns a lot in the process.

Suppose the best analogy I can come up with is those Youtubers who just post videos taking the piss against those who try their best in whatever game they're recording.

I'm sure he's got Aspergers or something, he doesn't deal with people well when they don't see his POV, plus he goes really deep into learning about certain subjects like trains and old aircraft.

He's that guy we all know who's really interesting for about 5 minutes, then you just want to get away from him but he won't let you.

I thought the program was ... OK.

Bike looked pretty cool but I could have lived with more time analysing how they overcame some of the design & build challenges and less time watching him crawl round the roads holding up traffic.

I imagine part of the reason for the sidecar was they knew it would be very slow and therefore tough to ride consistently balancing on 2 wheels.

Why did he invite Oz Clarke? He brought nothing to the programme and and as usual drank alcohol and brought James's efforts down.

I also think the sidecar was there for stability too more than anything else.
