I don't know about Mammoth locks but I'm sure a Mammoth would sh*t up anyone who tried to steal your bike.

The two big names in locks are Abloy and Squire.

Wouldnt bother with anything but almax personally. Maybe others that are good out there but almax has such good feedback its the safest bet.

How would you lock a mammoth up? I mean you could hardly clamp it at the road side!

mammoth locks are bulk bought chinese rubbish

dealers love them because they can buy disc locks for between 3 and £5 and sell them for £10-£15 and more

depends what you mean by good.

Are they worth what they cost? some are. The shackle locks in particular are good quality for the price as are the ground anchors but they are not Almax quality or Almax price so why compare them at all?

The reality about locks/chains etc for bike security is that the only buggers they'll put off are the opportunist thieves, some 'pond-life' walking by wishing to 'try his luck' that's why I usually use a push-bike cable-lock thingy, it's enough to put this shit off. If some twat's really serious about nicking your bike he'll have a van and a mate and they'll lift it wholesale unless it's chained to a post or something like it and they'll probably have a battery angle-grinder to see to that anyway. Anti-theft devices convince the bike owners more than discourage thieves, but you've got to have something.

And which of the replies above are based on any sort of objective information about the locks?

Mammoth might be cheap shit with a big markup, but are Squire and Abloy better?

Squire lock picked in seconds.

Abloy lock picked in seconds.

More likely to be smashed or have the shackle cropped, I'd imagine. How well do any of them stand up to that? Seen any evidence?

For those that don't know, the "lockpicked in x seconds" videos are bullshit. It's their lock, they've practiced, they know the pin release order. Once you know that then it's easier but it takes time to learn that, they never show how long it takes them to learn.

It will be quicker to cut an almax chain/squire padlock, than to pick it for the first time. Each lock is unique.

I can pick cheap brass padlocks in seconds and front door locks in a few mins but not even ready to start on the squire yet... tried for about an hour so far with no luck.

Doesn't really matter what the lock is if the chain is only 12mm. All online products I saw for Mammoth locks are with a 12mm (sometimes 10mm) chain.

Quote:

On a 19mm chain, the Squire's shackle can't be cropped because it's closed shackle and the only visible bit of the shackle is physically inside the chain loop.

On a 16mm chain, the Squire's shackle would still be very hard to crop because the closed shackle guard bits leave you very little to grip on.

I've never had an Abloy but I imagine it's the same, so long as you get a closed shackle.

Quickest and cheapest way would probably be a decent sledgehammer and enough slack in the chain etc. to get a swing at it (the chain might give before the lock); after that, a hydraulic cutter or an angle grinder, which should make short work of any chain.

But a 12mm chain is going to be cut by a simple bolt cropper without much difficulty.

I got a Mammoth chain free with the YBR, it seems to be a generic 10mm affair which serves only as a psychological deterrent. Any determined chav with strong jaws could probably bite right through it.

you are not picking an Abloy PL362 period!

Squire SS65C has been picked, video above thats enough proof for me not to use them.

No videos of ABloy PL362 picked as yet so i am happy with that

no video of abloy PL342 picked yet but cut yes but the loop was very exposed!

If thats your budget i'd probably just go for a cheapish one - its only going to stop someone trying to drag it off either way, anyone slightly prepared to get through one of the budget chains will get it off whether its 20 quid or 50 quid. Its deterant and preventative for the local yobs at best Thumbs Down
