So I bought a Chinese CG 200 engine off of ebay new old stock for £200 to go into my CG 125. When I decided I was going to sell the CG and buy a trail bike my friend said he was interested in the engine.

I gave him the engine and said if it fits, give me £150 for it... So anyway i get a call today saying that it fitted and hes been riding it (did not tell me) but now he has a problem. He said the kick start "fell down" while he was riding (the leg prohibits this from happening?) and stopped the engine. And now when he tries starting the engine with the starter motor its like the kick is jammed to the engine and moves with it. I asked how he started it and he said he kicked it.

To me it sounds like he didn't engage the kick start gears before kicking it and sheared off some teeth, causing havoc further down the road... Anyone else got any thoughts? Really don't know what to do about this at the moment!

No way of knowing without someone being there that knows about bike engines.

Does sound like he'd fuxxored the kick start though.

Firstly, I hope you're not thinking about giving him a refund...... if you do then you are a retard

Secondly, I have nothing else to say.

Sure I know about engines, I just don't have access to it at the moment as its quite a distance away and was trying to think of any other things that could of happened to it. I thought he seized it at first but a breathed a sigh of relief when he said it did move on the starter motor.

Can - Thats the big issue... He has not given the money to me as we were not sure 100% if it would fit. When he called me it was the first I had heared that the engine had even been fitted let alone ridden, turns out hes been using it for a few days. The other thing i though is that he might not have changed the stock oil which I also told him to do. - Worst thing is he calls himself a mechanic (hes doing an apprenticeship and done a 2 year college course) but I wouldn't give a mini moto to him to fix.

I might offer to help him have a go at fixing it if you feel inclined. But he's already been holding out on paying you for a brand new engine, that as far as you know would have been in excellent working order.

He has broken it by the sounds of it, and is using that as an excuse to try and avoid paying you IMO. Could he have deliberately damaged the kick start to save himself £150?

I would tell him you want your money first and then if your feeling kind you will offer to help him fix his mistake with all parts costs from his pocket.

TBH if he really has tried it on, or deliberately fucked up a new engine to wriggle out of paying a mate, then £150 is worth it to call him a cunt and have nothing more to do with the wanker!

I await to be proved wrong?

A very long time ago, in the 1800's in fact I was riding a Honda TL125 up a steep muddy bank and the engine stalled out, I started rolling backwards in gear, I should have laid it down but anyway, my right leg caught the kickstart and as the engine was going backwards (in gear and stalled remember), the kick start was grabbed by the contra rotating insides and when it had got to full downwards travel there was a sickening noise and lots of oil came out, the cases had split open as the stop on the kickstart mechanism had reached full travel and forced them apart.

maybe this sort of happened to your engine?

Thanks for the replies all. I don't think he would have done this on purpose but he is a dumb git! Once when I was taking out my engine to do the top end and clean up in general, he started hitting the sump with a claw hammer because i would not budge. I went apeshit and said use a wooden mallet or you going to crack the sump! He said "nah its fine, its tough as nails"... Many swear words came out of my mouth that night. Oh yea he also rode a CBR 125 around for 2 years without doing an oil change, said that it was not pulling correctly and was going to do a top end. When I went over to give him a hand I went to drain the oil and about 2 drops of black treacle came out and that was it! Without the watercooler the thing would have been toast.

I think forearmed with the extent of his mechanical sympathy I wouldn't even have sold him a tin of tuna unless I'd already opened it for him.

Think you might be right bear, tried to keep cool over the phone but I think he realized that I was VERY pissed off... If I found out hes been bullshitting to save himself some money even though he made a mistake I will take it as a very personal insult as just recently I lost my job, making any income VERY valuable. Thanks for the replies anyway all, Ill update you with the outcome in the next week or so if you're all interested. Thumbs Up
